Scooter’s 871st bar, first visited in 2011.

This is a new bar across the street from Nickie’s. The front contains a small L-shaped bar, the back room has table seating and a stage for live music.

Drinks here were slightly more expensive than at the other bars but still reasonably priced.

Nickie’s 1971 Bar & Grill

There are two entrances to this establishment. The door on the left leads to the bright-decored pizza (and more) joint in the front. The door on the right leads to the dark-decored tavern in the back. (They are also connected by an interior passage.)

There were two very intoxicated men in their late 40s/early 50s who were arguing about some work that one of them took and the other didn’t get. It got to the point that they were literally bumping chests together. But it defused before it became truly entertaining.

It appeared there might be a beer garden in the back, past the pool table, but I didn’t go back there to confirm.

Rock House

Scooter’s 869th bar, first visited in 2011.

An open, airy music menu right on the corner of the busiest intersection in Tybee. There’s karaoke, live acts, and free pool during happy hours. It appeared they were also taking to-go or delivery orders for food but we didn’t look at the menu.

Our bartender was a friendly gal who whipped up some tasty drinks for us when we couldn’t decide what we wanted.

Wind Rose Cafe

Scooter’s 868th bar, first visited in 2011.

From the outside, all appearances are that this is a quaint and charming cafe, possibly not even having a real bar but just serving beer at the tables with your meals. So I was shocked to step inside and find a genuine good old dirty dive bar.

The place was pretty busy when we stepped inside, but we found a couple of empty stools at the far end of the bar.

Suddenly, a moment after we got our beers, the entire place cleared out. I mean, every single person in the place got up and filed out all at once, including the bartender! For a few minutes we were completely alone in there, dumbfounded. Finally, the bartender returned. We theorized later that everyone had gone out to check out somebody’s new ride.

Now, this place is also a cafe and does serve food, but we didn’t look at the menu.

We stepped into this bar on 16th (Tybrisa St.) looking for a quick bite to eat, and I’m glad we did! There’s a great menu of seafood here. We ordered a couple of appetizers, and the provolone stuffed shrimp became an instant favorite of mine.

We had some good and entertaining conversation with the bartender and a couple of the regulars.

There appeared to be a deck or patio out back but I didn’t go out the back door to confirm.

It was here that we learned that the bars here can server you drinks “to-go” and that you can drink them openly out on the street. So we got another round to take with us while we went to do some sidewalk shopping.

Doc’s Bar

Another small dive that, while on the main tourist strip, seems geared towards the locals.

There’s video poker, a snooker table, and Guinness on tap. Among the patron was a large black cat who we learned comes and goes as he pleases.

Despite what it says on the outside, they did not have any food here.

Benny’s Tybee Tavern

Scooter’s 865th bar, first visited in 2011.

A pretty nice dive that seems to be more for the locals than the tourists. There were several interesting intoxicated characters in the place.

The TVs were on the Food Network and the bartender told us about a fish sandwich he wants to invent in order to get Man vs. Food to visit. Don’t worry, Mr. Bartender, the name of the sandwich and the ingredients will remain secret!
