When I was last in downtown Excelsior Springs this was an under-construction shell, but I had since forgotten about it so it was a nice treat seeing it open when we were back this weekend.

I had a gingerbread old fashioned.

I asked about the vault door, assuming there was a speakeasy behind it. Nope, right now it’s just a small storage area but there are plants to convert it into a walk-in humidor.

I had a chocolate martini with toasted marshmallow.

It’s mostly a mercantile, but there’s a long bar down one side that is mostly stand-up for tastings, though there’s a few barstools at the bar end for those sitting down for beer, wine, or spirits.

We assumed this would be a wine tasting, so were surprised when we found out the tastings were of moonshine and various other spirits and liqueurs. Our choices were “everything on the bar and on the back wall”, and there were literally dozens of choices most of which we could barely read from the counter, so it was pretty much a crapshoot what we got but we did find some tasty surprises that we purchased.

Scooter’s 1702nd bar, first visited in 2023.

This beautifully-decorated wine cafe also serves an assortment of bourbon and exactly one beer (an import from Italy). The attached event spaces can host small weddings and other groups up to 50 people. Out front is a gorgeous patio area.

There are a couple of handmade kaleidoscopes to play with on the bar. One night a week hosts chess matches, another night of the week regularly hosts a psychic.

Beverage-wise I had the one beer they serve — La 150° Bionda by G. Menabrea & Figli — and a glass of Sangria.

Scooter’s 1234th bar, first visited in 2018.

This was intended to be a quick drop-in to pick up a visit to a local dive bar I’d known about for almost 30 years but never visited. Just a quick Bud Light, then leave.

Boy was I wrong.

In a bizarre stroke of luck, today was also the first day of their brewery operation that I had never heard a peep about until this visit, and we wound up being their very first customers! They only had 4 of their own beers ready for sale (Atlas Brew, Irish Stout, Russian Imperial Stout, and a barleywine they’d been working on for near 2 years), but all four of them were hit out of the park. We also got to sample their not-quite-ready-for-sale Scottish Ale (it wasn’t fully carbonated yet) and even being partially-flat it was outstanding.

I had a flight of their Elixir Stout, Relief IPA, Pick Me Up Pale Ale, and Therapy Kolsch.

I did not try the food, but I saw several plates bring delivered and it looked great.

Scooter’s 500th bar, first visited in 2008.

Dani’s Hitch Lot opened this summer in the space formerly occupied by the Downtowner. However it is three times the size of the old bar… walls have been knocked down extending the bar into two adjacent buildings.

For those unfamiliar with Excelsior Springs, the Hitch Lot is a piece of land downtown that was gifted to the city around the turn of the last century by E.L. “Liv” Morse, with the stipulation that horses never be barred from the land. (Hence the name.) While technically it’s probably still legal to tie up your horse there, nowadays it is set aside by the city as a safe place for teenagers to cruise and hang out. Dani’s Hitch Lot, while borrowing the landmark name, is a few blocks away on the other end of downtown Excelsior Springs.

Oddly, B and I went back and forth asking for various beers we were in the mood for and they didn’t have any of them. Since we were unable to make up our minds, the bartender gave us both Mickey’s Malt Liquor.
