Big Rip is a smaller facility with an intimate bar area. They brew small batches and experiment with multiple flavors, so their hours tend to vary based upon how long each batch of beer lasts.

Fate seemed to have chosen Cinder Block Brewery for me, because it met every single one of these criteria and opened right after I reached #999.

I started off with the beer flight and, while I normally prefer the darker beers, I found the Northtown Native to be my favorite of the set.

As a slideshow of my previous 999 bars played on the wall, my family and friends sampled the brews and the salty snacks. (Free popcorn!) We also enjoyed the cake we brought in.

There’s free wifi, a popcorn machine, menus for various delivery places you can order in food from (Caddyshack Pizza being the best option of course). And for the technophiles such as myself, you can pay with your phone with the Square Wallet app.

As the first review noted, the hours are odd. And, at least in my experience, not always consistent during the week. I’ve arrived early (but during the posted hours) on a couple of occasions and found it not open yet.

Inside, the space seems a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. Just about all the domestics are on tap. Helen’s JAD has a surprisingly good beer selection — almost too good — it very nearly makes this place not qualify as a dive. However beer prices are a tad high — at least for domestics. Imports seemed to be more reasonably priced.

I just discovered that you can order food online through the JAD’s web site. Dive bars aren’t supposed to do that! Maybe Helen’s JAD isn’t really JAD after all????

In addition to the bar at the center of the restaurant, there’s a courtyard in back with a stage for live entertainment. And they put it to use often!

The bartenders here are very friendly, and I really appreciate their attentiveness. They refuse to let my glass sit empty!

There’s a very extensive bottled beer selection, and as of 2009 or so a nice semi-covered patio.

It’s amazing how much traffic this bar gets, considering how hidden it is. (Though the demolition in early 2011 of a long-abandoned building across the street has improved visibility.)

Oak Tree is a pretty typical old-style neighborhood dive bar & grill. It and Helen’s JAD actually make good bookends for the Armour corridor in NKC. Located behind the CVS, this is also the northernmost entry on the Swift Avenue dive bar row.

The seating area is divided into two main sections, with the V-ish shaped bar in the center forming the divider. There are pool tables, various bar games, and at the west end a stage area for live entertainment.

With friendly bartenders and regulars, this is a good, old-school dive bar to unwind in.

There are two rooms. The front room contains the bar, a few small tables, and a couple of games. The back room as several more tables and the pool tables.

The food here is typical bar food — except it’s good. Quite good for the price. The nachos and steaks are popular, I’m a fan of the burgers and tenderloins myself. I believe the kitchen closes at 10pm. Takeout is available.

Like most other bars in NKC, as of about 2009 there is now a semi-covered patio out back.

It’s not a very big bar, but it had enough room for pool, a couple of games, and space for a DJ. There is live entertainment every night — either karaoke or a DJ — and it’s all-request.

Beer prices are good here, some of the cheapest pitchers around. Definitely a good deal.

Things can get dicey here late at night so keep your guard up. The bouncers are good at taking care of troublemakers, but fights do sometimes break out that have spilled into the parking lot across the street on rare occasion. I don’t think it’s enough of a problem to avoid this place, just be smart and stay cool.

On my first visit I was greeted by a scrappy little mop dog on the floor and a gruff bartender who seemed to think it was very strange that I kept tipping him for my drinks. By the way it’s all bottles and cans here — no taps.

I didn’t really care for this place. It was ok, but I’ve been to a lot of better dives. However it must be doing SOMETHING right, because it’s consistently open on weekday nights even though the superior (in my opinion) Pat’s Pub just a few doors north rarely seems to make it open past 9pm during the week. River City Tavern is not open on weekends though, or at least not consistently.

This bar doesn’t serve food, but they let you order food from the Chip Shot next door and bring it in to eat.

The bartenders here are great — I haven’t met one yet I don’t like. Still, this isn’t my favorite bar in Swift. No fault of the owners or staff, I think it’s just the fact that this bar attracts a younger crowd than most of the other bars in this area.

Currently karaoke is Monday and Tuesday nights, poker is on Thursday nights, and the rest of the nights are DJs.

Beer on tap is very cheap. There is also food here, but I haven’t tried it yet and don’t know what all they serve.

In addition to the bar and dining area there is a new patio out back, and lately the bar has been hosting live music on Friday nights. (So far with no cover.)

This is a very laid back place, and I enjoy dropping in from time to time on my way home from the bowling alley.

My only complaint is with the hours. It is only open during the day on Saturday (unless they are hosting a special event), which is understandable given its location. But except for Friday nights the closing times are inconsistent. Sometimes I can stop in after bowling on Tuesday night, but most weeks it’s already closed by the time I get over there at 9:00. Consistent hours could do a lot to help increase evening business.

On the other hand, maybe Pat just wants to be able to go to sleep.
