Scooter’s 1825th bar, first visited in 2024.

While I was circling around the block after leaving the brewery I noticed this cocktail bar and decided to check it out. They had only been open 2 months longer than the brewery. It serves craft cocktails and upscale appetizers and small plates. They also had a whisky menu and limited beer menu.

I ordered from the Seasonal Autumn Cocktails menu and had a S’mores Old Fashioned, complete with flaming marshmallow.

I was camping nearby at Smithville Lake and got bored one afternoon so decided to head into town to check out the new brewery I’d heard about (opened 3 months earlier).

The oldest part of the building (south end) was originally a gas station, the bartender was unsure what the newer addition had originally been used for. There’s lots of eating inside throughout two rooms and a big covered patio in the front. There’s a kitchen but I didn’t try the food since I’d just eaten lunch not long earlier.

In addition to their craft beer the menu also includes cocktails and frozen margaritas.

My beer flight consisted of The Duke (imperial brown ale), Watkins Mill Campground (English ale), 37th Chamber (Irish Stout) and Steven’s Last Night In Town (spiced Belgian IPA), a brand new beer they had just tapped less than an hour before I got there.

Scooter’s 1103rd bar, first visited in 2015.

This was an unplanned stop. We were intending to go to a bar in Plattsburg, but exited in Kearney when we should have exited in Lathrop. We were lamenting out mistake due to increasingly full bladders, and upon spotting this place did a quick turn-around to stop in.

We sat at the U-shaped bar and chatted with a couple who had recently returned from a few years stationed in Germany.

As far as American Legion bars go, this is one of the best I have been to. It actually has taps with more than just the standard domestics! We would like to have stayed longer, but we were already running nearly an hour behind schedule.

Nice place with a good tap selection. We had Mule Kick, it was sweeter than usual and the coffee and chocolate flavors were stronger than usual. B didn’t like it, I didn’t mind it but it was too rich for me to be able to drink lots of it. B found an inchworm on the bar and took it out to a tree.

UPDATE IN 2025: After having been closed for a while, this is now Gizmo’s Tavern. There no longer appear to be any beer taps (at least I could not find any), focus is now on cocktails and bottled beer. Food is quite good.

Scooter’s 374th bar, first visited in 2007.

As I was looking for the men’s room in a dark hallway someone opened the bar’s back door, sunblinding me enough that I had to ask the woman who entered which door was the one I needed. My beer may have been the first draw of the day, it had a slight fruity taste.

A strip mall bar right off the highway. Everyone assumed we were here for some fishing event that was going on at the lake.
