I was tasked with with us finding lunch somewhere along the way to the coast, still in Portland, and only just barely off the route. I added the requirement that it have good beer. I’d say I did well!

In addition to may sausage plate lunch I had the Dark & Luscious Horchata Stout on Nitro, and then either a 2015 or 2016 version of The Abyss. (Unfortunately I forgot to make not of which.)

My Father’s Place

Though I wanted to, we were not going to stop here because it was getting late and we needed an early start in the morning. But when wa walked back from Rum Club and saw that it was literally right next door to our hotel, we decided to go ahead and stop in for a quick drink.

This ended up being our favorite bar that we visited in Portland, we ended up staying for three rounds, and even came back the next morning for breakfast.

The place is divided into three sections. The north third is the diner area and is family friendly. The middle third is the main bar area, and the southern third had arcade games (several pinball machines) and a pool table. Minors are not permitted outside of the diner section. There was a small amount of sidewalk seating but it was unclear to me whether drinks could be taken outside.

Lots of quirky and vintage decor all about the place, so plenty of things to look at.

I started with an Original Amber Ale by Oakshire Brewing. Then we had some sort of house specialty adult root beer float type of drink. Then we had shots of some kind, I don’t remember what. Then we walked next door to our hotel and slept well.

Rum Club

This was a last-second addition to out evening that we almost didn’t get to visit because they were requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination and my wife didn’t have her vaccination card with her. Luckily I was able to find a photo I had taken of it a few months earlier.

There’s a covered patio outside at the entrance, and a cool curved bar inside. It was pretty crowded inside and the weather was nice so we chose the patio.

I think we both had two cocktails here, but I am not certain. I know for a fact that I had the one named Negative Creep (see the menu on their web site). If we did have a second round, my second drink was probably either Venus In Furs or Old Quartermaster.

The Slammer Tavern

I’ve had a t-shirt for this bar for years but had never been, so it was a convenient find that it was only a 3 block walk from our hotel.

With the whole place decked out in Christmas lights, there’s a large rectangular bar in the middle plus small counters along the outer walls. Picnic tables line the outside walls along the sidewalk. There’s Skee-Ball and a passageway to a restroom that looked intriguing enough that I’m kicking myself for not checking it out even though I didn’t have to go.

I had This IPA by Cascade Lakes Brewing Company.

This wasn’t intended to be our first stop in Portland but the first place on our list, up the street, was already closed. This nearby spot had food and drinks so won our business instead.
