Scooter’s 1163rd bar, first visited in 2016.

This dive bar was directly acruss the street from the rear exit of our previous bar, and was our last stop for the night. A rather long building, the back wall featured a long bar and a shuffleboard table.

I had a Glacial Trail IPA by Central Waters Brewing.

Scooter’s 1162nd bar, first visited in 2016.

After Paradise Loung we started walking to the western corner of the square with no particular destination in mind, and this was the first place that caught our attention. The bartender was friendly and helped us choose what would be the next and final bar of the night.

I had the #003 Chocolate Lab (porter).

Paradise Lounge

We passed at least half a dozen bars walking over to the south corner of the square, but I’d heard good things about this place and didn’t want to miss it.

This is a dive through and through, apart from the large craft beer selection.

I had a Scott Karate (Scotch ale) by Dark Horse Brewing.

Tipsy Cow

This restaurant is a tiny little two-room wedge directly facing the capitol building. There’s a small sidewalk seating area demarcated by cow print painted on the sidewalk.

As soon as we sat down at our table (the only open seats in the house — a tiny cocktail table in the back corner) an unforecast downpur began and everyone outside dashed inside, smooshing us.

I ordered us some chicken tenders as neither of us were that impressed with the appetizers we’d had earlier in the evening, and I had a Madtown Nutbrown (brown ale) by Ale Asylum.

Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company

Madison’s oldest currently-operating brewpub encompasses two buildings on the eastern corner of the outer ring of the Capitol Square. The southwest of the two buildings sits a little higher and seemed to be a bit quieter, while the lower building (where we spend most of our time) had pool tables and darts and was a bit more of a party crowd.

I had Great Dane’s Emerald Isle Stout. You’d think it would be quite a bit higher ABV than just 4.36% considering how blurry my only interior photo turned out…

Come Back In

Scooter’s 1158th bar, first visited in 2016.

A dive-ish bar that shares the same kitchen (and I believe owners) as Eseen Haus but has a different menu. I think it had outdoor seating but it was hard to tell for certain since its extryway blends in with Essen Haus’s. The entrance is through the back parking lot under several trees so it was hard to get a picture, the main photo above is a Google Street view of the unused “front” side.

80s music was playing, there was a good selection of local craft beer, and it wasn’t super loud or busy. I enjoyed this place. We had planned to “come back in” the next morning for breakfast but decided to skip it and get on the road.

There were impressive displays of various knick-knacks, including a rather extensive collection of salt-and-pepper shakers.

I had the Satin Solitude Imperial Stout by Central Waters Brewing Company.

Essen Haus

Scooter’s 1157th bar, first visited in 2016.

German restaurant with a covered outdoor seating area and an enevaled bar area indoors.

We were hungry but wanted something quick and light, so we got a couple of appetizers. It ended up taking over an hour.

I had The Commuter (a Kolsch) by One Barrel Brewing Company, a Madison microbrewery that releases only one type of beer at a time.
