Missy’s White Rabbit is located in one of the staircase alleys, either one flight down or 2 flights up depending on which street you start from.

There are three main seating areas here — the main bar – dark and eclectic. A side room with a large mural and natural light from large windows, and a long narrow deck along the back of the building overlooking Main Street. We chose the deck.

Since I had gotten hammered on Friday, I only had a Guinness here so the rest of the group could have the opportunity to drink as much as they wanted. Lots of tequila and rum was poured.

The Quarter

One of two bars in the New Orleans Hotel, I wouldn’t necessarily call this a basement bar because it doesn’t seem to be at the bottom of the building, but it’s definitely below street level. There’s a modest-sized bar counter and a large lounge area. The bar hosts a Saturday burlesque during the summer season.

The sidewalk out front is made of glass instead of concrete, and the bar sticks out under the sidewalk. In addition to providing some natural light, if you are sitting at the bar counter you can look up and see people walking overhead.

We were there day-drinking on a weekday so at the time of our visit it was pretty dead.

I had a Hibiscus Cider by Black Apple Cider and a Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi (Gin, Berry Simple Syrup, Lemon Juice, Topped with Prosecco)

Tartan Inn

We decided to visit just one other bar in West Peoria, and it was a choice between Owls Nest and Tartan Inn since they are basically across the street from each other. We decided Tartan Inn looked more our speed.

We walked in to a jubilant crowd, and as free pudding shots were placed in our hands (they were handing them out to everyone) a voice rang out “It’s Cari with a C!” We looked over and saw the “Kari with a K” birthday party group from The Basket Case last night — minus Kari. They took a picture of us to send to her as proof.

This place used to be a neighborhood grocery store. I don’t know when it was concerted into a bar but it has been the Tartan Inn since at leas 1990. The current owners took over in 2017 or 2019 (I forgot which), and were now celebrating the recent purchase of the entire building as opposed to just the business.

I would not go as far as to call this an LGBTQ bar because the clientele seemed far more diverse, but the décor and welcoming attitudes show it’s definitely LGBTQ-friendly.

Outside is a courtyard with covered and open-air tables, and a separate building labeled “doobie den” that we didn’t investigate so I don’t know if that’s really is or not.

This was our favorite bar of the trip and one of my top favorite bars ever.

I had a pudding shot and a Santa’s Private Reserve (2023 stout) by Rogue Ales.

I’ve never been in here before because I’m rarely in this part of town during the hours this place is open. Finally got a chance to today when an after-after-party of the after-party of a funeral decided to come here.

While I opted not to mark this as “sports bar”, one of the regulars told me he comes here specifically to watch games om the ample supply of big-screen TVs.

Officially this is a gay bar, but we visited shortly after opening time so it was just us and the bartender. As a result, we only got to experience the “bar” aspect.

There’s a pool table in front and a small open area in the back that I imagine serves as a dance floor during the busy part of the evening.

My exterior photo did not turn out, so I stole this photo from Google Street View.

This is technically a gay bar, but other than the dancers in a back this seemed more like an all-are-welcome type of place. Similar to Balanca’s or The View back home.

There was a cover charge, but it was only a buck so I went ahead and paid. The drink was a mystery shot, something minty tasting. We chatted with a middle-aged couple standing at one of the tables.

Chuck’s Bar

This was the first bar we spotted after descending the steps to the riverfront. It’s a quirky, funky dive with tons of character.

Our bartender was fun and friendly, and whipped us up some bonus shots to go with our beer.

There’s a pool table in the back, a lounge area with plush chairs in the front, and the restrooms are just as run down and dirty as you’d hope for in a place like this.

Lookup up info about this bar later I found it classified under “gay bars”. Personally, I didn’t see it. However I see no problem with calling it “gay-friendly”, since it seems like the kind of place where anyone is welcome and can feel free to be themselves.

Club Synergy

Because of the name, we expected more of a trendy night club. Instead we found what seemed to be a pretty normal, relaxing beer/cocktail bar. There was a pool table and a juke box. There were several people at the bar, so we got a couple of bottles of beer ($1.75) and sat at a nearby table.

Sitting near us at the bar was a woman who kept falling out of her sweater. B and I kept watching her and quietly joking about it.

Suddenly, from the back, a guy resembling Lafayette from True Blood came sashaying in and bounced from lap to lap of several of the guys at the bar. As we watched his antics we soon noticed that “he” had breasts.

Looking around the room, we noticed that another woman had an adams apple. Then we noticed that some of the women kinda looked like men.

I noticed B furiously pressing keys on his phone, then he turned it and held the screen in front of my face to show me his search results. “Macon’s premier crossdressing night club”, “Hottest gay bar”, “Great alternative lifestyle scene”…

We didn’t realize it at the time, but what we saw turned out to be only a small part of the overall place. We had no idea there was a bigger room that is more of a night club format, or that there’s an outdoor bar as well.

The first time I visited I got the cold shoulder. Since then I’ve had a great time and the staff has been more friendly.

An all-lifestyles/swingers bar, but don’t let that scare you away if you’re not into that sort of thing.

Visited during a scavenger hunt. Who says 4 guys can’t go to a lesbian bar? They had just opened for the day so the place was almost empty, but our bartender was very happy to help us find things for our hunt. She even gave Bill a dance, marking off one of the items on our list.

The View

We played several rounds of trivia here. This may have been a gay-friendly bar based upon the rainbow-colored Bud Light clock and the colorful beer tap. However neither of my friends thought it was a gay bar, one of whom is gay himself.

Update: I was right. Looks like my friend needs to take his GAYBAR-GAYDAR in for a tuneup.

We had noticed a large group in a fenced area in front of The Gay 90s, a place we had assumed was a gay bar both from the name and the techno beat coming from inside. Brandon asked the bouncer at the place next door about that fenced-in crowd and he said it was a smoking area. Brandon then asked him where a good place was to get a beer and the bouncer said “right on inside here”. We stepped in and found this to be a gay bar with a stage and poles.

Facing several artistic wall photos of nude men, we glanced around the room and noticed that this placed sold its own private-label bottled water. (We would return later to get some as souvenirs.) This was one of the first bars we had been in where no one talked to us, and Brandon wondered if his wedding band was causing people to believe we were a couple. Finding the restroom here was an task, it was way in the back through a dark area and around a smaller bar that was a little more, um, “adventuresome”.

Scooter’s 95th bar, first visited in 2006.

This ended up being one of the most fun places we went to. It was laid back, relaxed, and friendly.

B played pool with a lesbian with a mullet. While he was waiting for his next turn a guy came over and flirted with him briefly.

“I’m winning,” B told me, refering not to the pool game but to getting hit on.

But later I got checked out, blatantly and repeatedly, by a guy who was chatting with me while I was using the restroom.

After I told B this, I was declared the winner.

The Stables

Scooter’s 73rd bar, first visited in 2006.

The Stables is an okay dive bar. Being close to several office towers its nice to walk to with co-workers for come cheap after-work beer. (Served cheap and very cold.) There’s pool tables in the back,Silver Strike in the front, and an old-style big screen TV that’s used mainly for music channels but sometimes for sports. The bar is a cozy L-shape, and there is ample table seating. True to its name, riding equipment and pictures of horses are placed throughout the bar.

For a long while, Stables was the only bar downtown that was not open on Saturdays. That finally changed about a year ago.

Another change is that The Stables has quietly become gay-friendly… at least on certain nights of the week. I wouldn’t say it’s completely become a gay bar just yet, and (at least from what I’ve seen so far) it really shouldn’t make anyone uncomfortable who isn’t into that sort of place.

Still, if you happen to be an exceptionally handsome young fellow, don’t be surprised if you get hit on by some middle-aged dude in a wifebeater. Just laugh it off and chill… you’ll be fine.
