Scooter’s 1836th bar, first visited in 2025.

This is one of two bars in the Basin Park Hotel, located on the 1st floor (which is actually a level up from the building entrance). After Voodoo Lounge I was petty lit (I had been drinking longer than anyone else in the group), and I am honestly unsure how we even wound up here, as it was on the other side of the street from both where we started and where we were heading. But I remember that someone in the group needed to use the restroom, and this bar was right next to the restrooms.

This is a modestly upscale and relaxing space, with a fireplace as the centerpiece and a pool table to one side.

I know I had an old fashioned. I feel like I might have had one more drink after that, but I was pretty much gone after the old fashioned and cannot say for sure.

A whiskey/cocktail bar that opened a few months ago, this one with theme honoring American military aviation history.

When I was last in downtown Excelsior Springs this was an under-construction shell, but I had since forgotten about it so it was a nice treat seeing it open when we were back this weekend.

I had a gingerbread old fashioned.

Huey’s Hidden Vault

This is a new whiskey, cocktail, and cigar bar that opened this past August. Don’t worry if you don’t like the smell, cigar smoking is only allowed on the back patio!

I asked about the vault door, assuming there was a speakeasy behind it. Nope, right now it’s just a small storage area but there are plants to convert it into a walk-in humidor.

I had a chocolate martini with toasted marshmallow.

Whiskey and craft beer bar with all sorts of high-end spirits, and creative cocktails. Also serves some pretty good pizza and burgers. I’ve since been several times and have had all sorts of the drink offerings.

There is a speakeasy hidden behind a bookcase. I haven’t yet asked what its ours are or how to get access.

We decided to pick this place for dinner because it had a good menu and looked pretty. The bar area was pretty crowded (in part due to a Christmas pop-up bar operating in the back) so we wait in the covered entryway next to the fireplace.

I had fish & chips and a Brasserie Noir (2017) by Goose Island Beer Co. — Bourbon County Brand Stout aged in Brasserie Noir red wine barrels.

Havana Garage

We were walking back to our hotel from Barry O’s, staying under awnings and canopies as much as possible due to the unexpected torrential rain that was falling. We made it almost 2 blocks before discovering we were going to run out of cover for the remainder of the walk. From looking at the radar it appeared we had another 20 minutes before it would lighten up, so we decided to have one more unplanned stop to pass the time.

Looking back at what all we had passed, we decided Havana Garage looked the most interesting so we backtracked to there.

As it is a cigar bar, it was a bit too smoky inside for our comfort. So we decided to take our drinks to the headed/covered patio out back.

The patio is surrounded with vegetation and included a large tree that passed through one of the tables. The patio has a back alley entrance that we had already passed twice before while walking around today. I thought it looked enticing, my friend thought it look creepy.

I had an Omaha Stylee IPA by Brickway Brewery & Distillery.
As we were leaving I had stopped to use the restroom (which honestly I had to do at least once at every single bar we went to), and I remember something was odd about it but I can’t remember what. I remember it was in the basement, but it was something else. I’ll have to pee there again someday to try to figure out what it was.

Casa Di Vite

We were heading to Atlas Saloon Brewery when we noticed a few (within the past year) wine bar that had opened up a block before our destination.

This beautifully-decorated wine cafe also serves an assortment of bourbon and exactly one beer (an import from Italy). The attached event spaces can host small weddings and other groups up to 50 people. Out front is a gorgeous patio area.

There are a couple of handmade kaleidoscopes to play with on the bar. One night a week hosts chess matches, another night of the week regularly hosts a psychic.

Beverage-wise I had the one beer they serve — La 150° Bionda by G. Menabrea & Figli — and a glass of Sangria.

McShane’s Irish Pub & Whiskey Bar

And another great bar! We love Detroit.

We stayed here for quite a while, sharing several plates of appetizers while playing shufflepuck and having a few rounds of drinks.

The bar counter works its way up a few steps, continuing around the corner from the bar room into the main dining area. There is also a big, well-decorated patio in the back.

I had a Dragonâ€™s Milk Reserve: Coffee Chocolate (2023) by New Holland Brewing, an O.C.P. (Oatmeal Creme Pie) (brown ale) by Pigeon Hill Brewing Company, and whatever shots were ordered.

This trough appears to have bene custom-made to fill 100% of the available space.

After dinner we were supposed to go to Hermann WurstHaus to pick up all kinds of delicious meats, but they closed over an hour early!!!! Easily missed out on a few hundred dollars in sales to our group.

Since it was pouring down rain and we still had just under an hour to wait for our train, our choices were to wait outside under the train station awning or go across the parking lot for one last round of drinks.

I had a Barrel Aged Manhattan (pictured below). I believe there was one other drink — possibly a round of shots — but I don’t remember for certain.

We didn’t know this even existed until the bartender at 9th & State mentioned it was the source for the whiskey used in their cocktail called The Murdock. (Murdock, as it turns out, is the nickname of the bespectacled figure in the West Bottoms Whiskey logo.)

There’s picnic table out front and a seating area inside just past the bar. There’s also a cozy sofa seating area in the loft above the bar.

I had a coffee-based cocktail called The Whiskey Waker. My wife, not a fan of whiskey, opted for a glass of wine.

A brand new craft beer/whiskey bar, my first visit was just a few days after it opened. It’s located in the ground-level retail space of a parking garage about a block from the Kauffman Performing Arts Center.

The bar area has ample seating, and there is a large covered patio as well. Note that during the daytime, from the street it can be really had to tell a business is here. It’s on the south side of the garage (north side of 17th).

I had a Black Noise, Port Barrel Aged Black Noise, Black Noise (w/ Blueprint Coffee), Rum Barrel Aged Liquid Spiritual Delight (LSD), and Little Big Hop; all by 2nd Shift Brewing.

The Belfry

I’ve known about this place since it opened a while back, but bring that it’s in a spot that’s kind of hidden from view I had just kept forgetting to check it out. I finally got a chance today.

Normally I don’t go for places with such a clean (almost sterile) and higher prices, but both of those work here and I found myself loving this place. There is a TREMENDOUS beer selection (as well as scotch & whiskey, which I’m not really into myself), and the bartender was very knowledgeable about all of the products. We ended up spending a lot more time (and money) here than we planned to, and we’re looking forward to a return. The fact that they open at 7am makes me like it all the more.

Note: The address says Grand, but the entrance is actually on 16th Street.
