We got our food to go to take back up to the room, so I had a cocktail while waiting. (I was a bit miffed abput paying $23 for Mongolian Beef but OMG if it wasn’t the best Mongolian Beef I’ve ever had!)

My cocktail was their “Gin e Tonica”. (Roku gin, spiced pinot grigio syrup, lime, fever tree mediterranean tonic)

Finding this place was a bitch to find, mainly because my GPS decided that rather than just lead us DIRECTLY THERE we should instead turn left on a side street one block before the bar, then turn right in an alley next to a fire station, then declare that we had arrived when we were in fact 125 feet away on the wrong side of the building. Once we found it the next challenge was finding a place we could legally park the rental, but we finally made it work.

This is a really fun dive bar, and I wish we could have stayed longer. If I’m ever back in Austin, this will definitely be a re-visit.

I had the Firemans #4 (blonde ale) by Real Ale Brewing Company, then later peed it out my beers from earlier in the day into a trough.

My friend is a huge fan of Supernatural, and co-star Jensen Ackles is one of the owners here so we had to visit even though we knew the odds of running into him here would be very slim.

This place definitely takes the award in terms of the beauty/serenity of its outdoor seating area. The pics don’t do it justice. And, like Jester King, it also has a playground for the kids. There’s also a permanent food truck outside making pizza.

I had the Haulin’ Oats (brown ale) and The Grackle (imperial stout).

Our first stop was Jester King, which was insanely busy and offered is a bit of a challenge to even be able to park.

The system here is a bit weird, but I get it. It would be way too easy to lose track of people in such an expansive complex without requiring check-in and hand stamps. As hot as it was I would have much preferred being inside the Brew House, but it was closed so the Pole Barn was as close to comfortable air as we could get. (The misting sprays helped somewhat though also added to the humidity.)

We were too hot to explore the grounds but there was a goat herd somewhere, a vineyard, and a playground for the kids. Oh and I got to pee in an Airstream converted into a restroom.

We had some brisket, and I had the English-style Summer Ale and the Bitter Death (Belgian ale).

This is a basement bar right next to the state capitol building, and I had looked forward to trying to find it since I had heard it was a bit tricky but the Uber driver spoiled it by saying “You’ll find what you’re looking for right around that corner.”

The bartender was outside having a smoke so it took us a little bit to get served. It was much darker inside than my pictures let on. The place was pretty busy and it was clear most if not all were regulars, but we found an open spot to sit next to the stairs to the restroom.

The restrooms themselves are up a flight of carpeted stairs in the back with the stairwell walls covered with photos of bar patrons. Just outside the restroom doors was another small table with a couple of chairs.

We both had Miller Lite bottles.

^*By finishing the night out here, I mean in terms of new places. It had always been our plan to go back to Coyote Ugly at the end of the night. (And that was a much different experience on a Friday night than it was the night before, and somehow included more shots.)

This brewery is truly massive, and is where I learned that the Electric Jellyfish I had over at theChive is what they are best known for.

There was a dog adoption event underway, and the place was packed with humans and canines of all types.

We ended up hanging out here for at least a couple of hours while my friend and his friend caught up. During this time my stomach started to get upset, so I ordered a pizza assuming it was hunger. But I could barely get any of it into me and I realized the electric jellyfish was not getting along with my belly. This would end up affecting me for the remainder of the day.

I had the Bearded Seal (stout) and the Cosmic Lust IPA, though both were a struggle the way my stomach was feeling.

And in better circumstances, we probably would have loved it.

Though I was beginning to feel better, my stomach was still too upset for me to order any sausages. My friend was beginning to get a headache. There was live music outside that was crazy loud, and instead of the chill environment Rainey Street had been sold to us as, it was completely overrun with people and far crazier than East 6th had been for us so far.

Plus so… many… college kids.

Nonetheless, I accomplished what I came here to do. I had the highly-regarded and recommended Pecan Porter by 512 Brewing, the only place I had found it mentioned in an online menu that we were going to be able to get to on this trip. I also had a Black Masses (imperial coffee stout) by Brash Brewing.

The tour begins at the company bar, where you get a drink to take with you on the tour. I chose an Electric Jellyfish (NE IPA) by Pinthouse Pizza. I had no idea yet (would find out at our next venue) that this is Pinthouse’s flagship beer. It would also turn out to be my undoing for the day, as everything after drinking it was a struggle due to stomach volume.

The tour was awesome, but since this is a bar blog I won’t spoil the fun of the tour.

After making a complete circle through both floors of the building, the tour ends at… the bar! This time I had a Rosé Cider from Austin Eastciders, which turned out to be a fortunate selection because our plan to later visit Austin Eastciders fell through and I happened to pick a flavor I had not tried before.

We were looking specifically for a place called Bikini’s Sports Bar Grill that Google said was open, but we could not find it anywhere. The address took us to BBG’s instead. Then I noticed that all the reviews for Bikini’s were rather old so surmised that Bikini’s must have gone tits-up and been replaced by BBG’s.

BBG’s is physically connected to the adjacent Happy Chicks bar next door via a common restroom area, and it kind of looked like both were served by the same kitchen. BBG’s had a more divey feel, however, so we were happy with out selection.

I had a Noisy Cricket (session IPA) by Friends & Allies Brewing.

The sidewalks were getting busier and we were dodging both other pedestrians and bar employees stationed outside the doors of bars enticing people in.

“Do you guys want to come on in?” called one of the voices too us.

“No thanks,” I said, “we’re done for the night.”

“You sure?” said the door attendant. “We have girls dancing on the bar.”

My friend’s eyes got really big and he looked back, then at me. “Scott, I’ve never been in a Coyote Ugly before. We HAVE to go!”

So we did. (I had already been to the Memphis location years ago, but had to allow my friend the same opportunity.)

Being a Thursday night it was not too busy at first, but it grew busier as time went on. About half an hour after our arrival a bachelorette party came in and that made the bar dancing almost constant.

I had two Guinness and at least one shot.

I have decided not to post any of the pictures of bar dancing because too many of the people on the bar were customers rather than employees.

This ended up becoming the real final bar of the night. What followed was a walk where we overshot the turn to the hotel by 2 blocks, stepping over/around several sleeping homeless people along the creepy route we used to correct that, and my friend crossing an intersection with a very wide berth that took him out onto the light rail tracks and at the time his reason for doing so seemed not only logical but even brilliant, but by morning neither of us could remember what that reason was.

I initially requested a cocktail called the Big Lebowski but the bartender warned it really wasn’t that good. So I switched to a chocolate martini, which she also warned wasn’t great, bit I insisted. It wasn’t great.

After that, who knows? I know there were at least two rounds of shots and at least one more round of (better) cocktails. But I have no documentation and little memory. My second may have been something lemon based, I have no clue about the shots.

We both had Miller Lights. This looked like it could be a fun place, but my friend was annoyed that his 12oz Miller Light bottle was $6 and that was comparable to the price of the much better beers at the breweries. Also, the music wasn’t a style either of us liked and was being played really loud, so we snapped out photos, chugged the beer, and left.

This was a bit confusing at our arrival, because the place we got dropped off looked nothing like the pictures we’d seen and had a different name. It turns out there are multiple businesses here sharing the same outdoor common area.

(I can’t figure out what neighborhood to classify this as. It seems to be outside of Downtown, and the closest matches for neighborhoods seem to be Clarksville or Old West Austin but Google disagrees.)

The beer is largely German style. I don’t know if there was bar seating pre-covid but as of August 2022 there were no stools at the long bar. Seating is at large picnic tables inside or at picnic tables out on the patio or scattered throughout the grounds. The ground appear to include a disc golf course.

I had the HefeWeizen, the Grodziskie (a smoked Polish beer), the Pilz (what they are best known for), and the Big Bark Amber Lager.

Though there were a few older people, overall the crowd was young… VERY young… and much of it was people trying to look and act cool (but failing at best, others were coming off as douches).

Based on what I know of the bar, I’d probably have loved it if I’d gotten there earlier when it wasn’t so crowded. I may give it another shot next time I’m in that area.
