We went to several Eureka Springs bars today, but this was the only of them I hadn’t been to before. We visited the upper level bar, located in the middle building of this ridiculously popular restaurant / bar / venue. We entered from the Spring Street side via the upper level deck, so while being the upstairs bar it was technically downstairs for us.

I had some sort of creamy chocolatey cocktail that I can’t remember the name of except that there was something definitely “gay” in the name. 😁

Station 7 Tavern

This bar is part of the Martin City Brewing family and serves their beer and food. We were there close to closing time so the spacious interior was mostly empty, and there were a few more people gathered around heaters in the even more spacious beer garden around back.

I had the Love, Coffee Stout and the Cordial Porter.

Despite it’s Lee’s Summit address, it’s located about a mile and a half outside of Lee’s Summit in a tiny sliver of unincorporated Jackson County Its western property line is the Blue Springs city limits, and its southern property line is the Lake Lotawana city limits.

After I left Edge on 7 I went on a bar crawl. This was technically stop #4, but it was the first since Edge on 7 that I had not been to before. I went to Iron Kettle Tap House (formerly Iron Kettle Brewing) and Ranch House before coming here.

This brewery opened a couple of years ago but I hadn’t had a chance now to make it out here. This is an extremely cute little place with rather good beer and one of the nicest restrooms I’ve ever seen. There’s a really nice outdoor area too, but despite it being partly covered and there being a fire we decided it was just too cold.

I had the Colombian Connection Coffee Porter.

I’m going ahead and marking this as having food, because they are in the process of adding a kitchen and its opening is imminent.

This brewery is located in an odd little geographical nexus. It is within the city limits of Lake Lotawana, has a Grain Valley address due to just barely being inside the 64029 zip code, and is within yards of Blue Springs.

Tri-City Brewing Company

I have had lots of beers from this brewery and even own some of their merchandise, but had never been. I realized it was only a 15-minute detour on our way back to Kansas City, so made the call to make the side trip.

This is a very dog-friendly brewery so there were a few pooches present, and the outdoor seating area is fenced-in so they can stretch their legs.

There isn’t food, but there are food trucks on certain days/times and a schedule is posted on the wall inside.

Since I’ve had so many of their beers I opted to not have a flight and instead have a full glass of Saginaw Joe Porter.

This was just a couple of blocks over from Rocky’s Bar so it was a no-brainer making this our next stop.

As newbies we parked in front of the home brew supply store, realizing only after we left we could have parked a lot closer.

All of the seating is outdoors, with a large pavilion providing rain cover got a good chunk of the area.

Some of our group had wine, some had ciders, some had beer. I chose the Dark Helmet (Schwarzbier).

Big Beach Brewing Company

I didn’t have a chance to make it here last year, but this time I was in town for two weeks which made it a lot easier to work in. The originally plan was to ride bikes here but we happened to be in a car when we decided to stop. That was for the best, because a nearby construction project would have made biking here more of a pain than it would normally be.

There’s ample seating inside as well as a massive courtyard outside. Food is served from a kitchen around the east side of the back of the building, from what I overheard this was a fairly recent addition. They had a wide variety of beer styles and they were all good to very good.

I had Let It Be Mild (English mild ale), Damn the Torpedoes (oyster stout), Surrender Cobra (award-winning Schwarzbier), Dixie’s Heart Irish Red Ale, and Rod’s Reel Cream Ale.

Fertile Ground Beer Company

We were doing a short overnight camp at LeFleur’s Bluff State Park on our way to Gulf Shores, and decided to go into town. It was a tossup between Fertile Ground Beer Company and Cathead Distillery, Fertile Ground won out after we discovered there was pizza available right across the hallway.

The pizza came from Poppy’s Pies — they have Detroit and Neapolitan styles — and can be taken into the brewery.

I had My Way Or the IPA and Colsons Original (golden ale).

We liked the beer AND the pizza enough that we came back again two weeks later on the way back home. That time I had another My Way Or the IPA and a Forgotten Space (also and IPA).

Stopped here on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Started out outdoor but later had to move inside. Good thing they are dog friendly inside and out!

A had a flight with the Quotidian Pint (pilsner), Oktoberfest 2025, Cicatrix (American IPA) and Bermuda Schwartz (Schwarzbier).

I then added on a Mexican Buddha (brown ale) and a Pulchritude (NE IPA). Then bought two bottles of Proud Mama (imperial porter) that I took hom to drink later.

(Oh, and I also had tacos.)

I decided I wanted to visit one brewery in Nashville while camped about 15 miles north of the city. Originally I was heading to Yazoo Brewing, but I got frustrated with heavy traffic and asked my GPS to find me something else. It brought me here. Nice work, GPS!

There are several picnic tables out front, but it was a bit hot so we sat inside. (By the time I left the place was packed including the outdoor picnic tables.)

They share space with FAB Pizza, which looked good but my wife was working on dinner back at the camper.

I had a flight with Demon Bru-en (porter), Celtic Grounds (coffee stout), Barley Knew Her (barleywine), and Turn a New Leaf (brown ale). I also bought a shirt and a couple of bottles to-go.

Much like our experience at Native Brews the day before, the food was terrific and the beer was good too. They also do not do flights, so I had a full pour of the Fireside Porter.

This Native-American (and I believe women as well) owned restaurant and brewery has two locations as of the day before our visit — this location in Cherokee and another in downtown Bryson City. The food was spectacularly good, and the beers was great too! Lots of outdoor activities to keep kids entertained as well.

They don’t do flights, so I had a pint of the Angry Beaver Porter.

After a few years of delays, this finally opened in the Fall of 2024. But since it’s only open 3 days a week, it took my 9 months after opening to finally get a chance to stop by.

I had the Red Headed German (Irish ale made with German hops & yeast), the Bramber (brown ale), the WyIPA (American IPA), and the Long Road Ahead (nitro oatmeal stout). There are also national-brand ciders, seltzers, and wine — as well as mixed drinks — for those who prefer something other than beer.

I was camping nearby at Smithville Lake and got bored one afternoon so decided to head into town to check out the new brewery I’d heard about (opened 3 months earlier).

The oldest part of the building (south end) was originally a gas station, the bartender was unsure what the newer addition had originally been used for. There’s lots of eating inside throughout two rooms and a big covered patio in the front. There’s a kitchen but I didn’t try the food since I’d just eaten lunch not long earlier.

In addition to their craft beer the menu also includes cocktails and frozen margaritas.

My beer flight consisted of The Duke (imperial brown ale), Watkins Mill Campground (English ale), 37th Chamber (Irish Stout) and Steven’s Last Night In Town (spiced Belgian IPA), a brand new beer they had just tapped less than an hour before I got there.

This winery / brewery is a few miles south of Petoskey. I’d originally planned to do a wine tasting or have a wine flight, but then I noticed a beer with an amazing name that sounded absolutely delicious (and it was). Unfortunately it had a high enough ABV that I had to be responsible and just have the one glass.

Great Turtle Brewery & Distillery

After high tea at the Grand Hotel we went to the bar at the top of the hotel, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the island and Lake Huron. We were going to have cocktails, but realized if we did we might not make the last ferry off the island.

We went out front to request a horse taxi, but were informed that even waiting for that might make us late and that it would be faster to walk.

As we were walking down the hill back toward town it occurred to me that if I took off at a light jog, I’d be able to get one more stop in and chug a beer while everyone else was catching up. So that’s exactly what I did.

Bonus, I’d received a Great Turtle t-shirt as a gift a year earlier, so now I could finally claim having been there when I wear it.

I ordered a Hoban Street Stout and drank as much of it as I could as quickly as I could until the rest of the group caught up to me. I finished about 3/4 of the pint and we made our ferry.

New Holland Brewing – Holland Tap Room

This brewery has been on my bucket list for a few years, and today our driving route just happened to take us within a few miles of it shortly after opening time! We were towing a camping trailer so it took of quite a while to find a place we could fit to park, but we finally found room in front of the post office a few blocks to the east.

New Holland’s tap room consists of three connected buildings. Furthest east, toward the center of the block, is the gift shop and packaged beer/spirits to-go store. Next over is the restaurant, and finally furthest west on the corner of the block is the bar — which includes additional mezzanine-level seating in the back. There’s café style seating out on the sidewalk, and also a large (mostly)-covered patio in the back.

Finally able to enjoy Dragon’s Milk in its natural habitat, I started with just regular Dragon’s Milk. Next up, Dragon’s Milk Reserve: Double Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout With Madagascar & Indonesian Vanilla Beans (2021-2). And, finally, Dragon’s Milk Reserve: Rum Barrel-Aged Stout with Chocolate, Hazelnut, & Toasted Coconut (2020-1).

Then I went over to the gift shop and spent way too much money.

These flight trays are cute, but were a nightmare for my vision-compromised companion to get his glasses in and out of.

As we walked in the door we were stopped by a lady who said “Here’s even more people I don’t recognize! I don’t remember you two at all!”

It turned out we had inadvertently crashed a reunion — I think possibly a 40-year high school reunion. (That’s just a guess.) Looking around, there were very few people in there who were not wearing name tags.

Thy were not doing flights — unsure if that is normal policy or temporary due to the reunion — so I had a Bourbon Barrel Texakan Willcott stout. There was disagreement and confusion about what the actual ABV was, so since it was barrel-aged and I was poured 12oz I decided to err on the side of caution and take it easy after this one.

Fernson Brewing Company

The next morning I woke up to dense but rapidly-lifting fog and I first walked a block north to The Source, a bar and coffee shop that I went to to get a coffee rather than beer (hence the lack of an entry for it on this site). I then turned around and walked south to the city’s one remaining brewery that I had not been to yet, sipping my coffee along the way. During the journey I thought it was strange that the main north-south street through downtown was completely empty of traffic — odd because it had been very congested doe the entirety of my visit here. The mystery was solved about a block before thee brewery when I realized I was following part of a 5K route.

Fernson is both a brewery and coffee shop, and as it opens at 7am it also serves breakfast. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a Snow Eater (stout). I also bought some merchandise, and also got a hot mocha (my second of the morning) to go.

After breakfast and my beer I took my coffee and walked around downtown to do some final sightseeing and view a few more sculptures. I then returned to my room to gather by bags and wait for my ride to the airport.

Severance Brewing Company

After I left Silver Moon Bar I began walking to Severance Brewing by way of the walking paths through Falls Park. But after making my way up the hill, with the brewery in sight only about 200 feet away, I encountered a construction fence. Finding no way around, I had to backtrack all the way to the park entrance and start over using the longer city sidewalks route. By the time I finally got here, I was tired.

The brewery was pretty busy, but post of the people were outside on the patio. There was a concert taking place at a public amphitheater just over a block away and the music was spilling up into here.

I had a Smōktoberfest (their recently-tapped smoked oktoberfest beer) and a Monster Cookie (oatmeal stout).

After finishing here I walked past the outdoor concert and returned to my room. Beat and buzzed, I settled in front of the TV to stay in the rest of the night.

Look’s Beer Company

This was the one brewery on my list that I considered cutting because it was so far away from everything else and by now I’d had beer of theirs and two other venues previously, but I was feeling okay and making good time so decided to give it a go.

Look’s Beer Company is located inside a massive single-story white building named Look’s Marketplace, located on a massive estate. It has several shops (mostly various food markets), the restaurant and brewery, a brunch place, and is also an event venue. The entire building is surrounded by outdoor seating.

There was a massive wedding party outside, and just after I put my order in they all decided to come into the brewery all at once. The staff wasn’t prepared for the surge (they’d apparently been given no notice) but they handled it well and forced everybody involved with the wedding to form a single-file line rather than inundating the entire circular bar from all sides as they’d initially been doing. This did annoy a few of the wedding guests but it was the only way to avoid chaos.

I noticed beer-battered walleye on the menu, so though I wasn’t really completely hungry yet I went ahead and had some fish & chips. Unfortunately they do not do flights here, so rather than sample several beers I had a glass of Chicken On A Raft (English porter).

After my lunch and a short nap I headed out on a long Uber ride to start the second half of my bar crawl. I started off with a brewery on the far east side of the city.

Pizza is served, and looked amazing, but I’d just fille dup on chislic and they didn’t have any single-serve options anyway, so I went without.

I had a Reference Point Porter, the Magic Marker (NEIPA), and a Dorothy’s New World Lager by Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. — the latter of which was an accidental mis-pour from one of the guest taps instead of the Magic Marker so was something I got to try for free.

There was a dog at a nearby table that reminded me a lot of my boy back at home so I had to sneak a picture.

About 10 months ago my best friend and I spent a few days in Omaha, and one night while visiting Crescent Moon Ale House for dinner we happened to set next two two Lupulin Brewery reps who were from this specific location. They bought us a round of their beer for us to try, and shared some swag with us — including a sticker that I had not put on my wall net because I don’t hang brewery stickers unless I have actually visited the brewery. Today’s visit allows me to finally display the sticker.

There’s no kitchen, but they do toast up some pizzas from a local supplier as well as allow outside food. (They have menus for the adjoining Ruby Tuesday that you can order from.)

Though the sidewalk does seem large enough for a few tables, there is no outdoor seating.

I had their Make IPA Piney Again (American IPA), Umbral Undulations (black IPA), Imperial CPB (chocolate peanut butter imperial porter), and Imperial Raspberry Truffle (imperial porter).

After dinner I walked back across the river again into the main core of the downtown area and headed to Woodgrain Brewing, located on the ground floor of a large office building.

I had pre-picked two beers that I was really looking forward to, so naturally they were two of the five with “sold out” signs on the menu board.

I ended up going with the Unnecessary Air Quotes (NEIPA) and the Overlapping Dialogue (Imperial IPA).

While I was enjoying my beer I overheard a conversation at the other end of the bar about how awful the TSA at the local airport (FSD) is. I wondered how the TSA at such a small airport could possibly be that bad and laughed it up. (Two days later I found out the answer: I’m pre-check and basically got two hernia exams anyway.)

My next stop was a brewery about a bock and a half south, where I decided to have dinner. It was here that I discovered Chislic, a South Dakota delicacy of meat bites coated in Turkish spices. I’d end up eating this as a meal two more times during my stay in Sioux Falls.

Beer-wise, I had the Oktoberfest and the Remedy IPA.

After turning in the rental car and getting checked into my AirBNB, I began a long evening of walking all over Sioux Falls’ surprisingly beautiful downtown area. This started with a walk across the Big Sioux River to a brewery several blocks southeast.

Trivia was getting going so the place was pretty busy, and I got a little extra entertainment watching the staff try to deal with the POS system somehow getting switched to Chinese and trying to figure out how to get it back to English.

I had a Barrel Aged Cake Actually (German chocolate cake rye barrel aged stout).

Based on my research this seems to be the most popular brewery in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and it actually has a second location in West Fargo that I didn’t visit since it was serving the same tap list.

This brewery is best known for its sours — a style I generally don’t like — butthey did have a few other options that were more my sped. I had the CocoMondo (cream ale) and the Take 5 (Peanut Butter Stout infused with pretzels, peanuts, and caramel).

After I figured out that Drekker Brewing was not actually the same thing as Brewhalla, I made my way over here to the tap room that more closely resembled the interior of a renovated train station like I was expecting.

There’s outdoor seating both in front of this building was well as in the courtyard between this and Brewhalla. There’s a bank of pinball machines, and additional upper-level mezzanine seating.

For this half of my flight I had the Turbo Sniffer (fruited sour) and the Good Company (lager).

I walked in here thinking this was Drekker Brewing. And it’s an easy mistake to make — the glassware all says Drekker and it’s all Drekker beer. But as I was working on my second beer I was wondering why the inside of the building didn’t look like any of the pictures I had seen online. I started investigating and realized that I was in a separate Drekker tap room in a new building — the taproom bein g the anchor of an indoor marketplace, event space, and hotel. The actual brewery was located in a completely different (but connected) building. So I decided to have only half my flight here and then go next door for the other half.

Here I had the Pillager (porter) and the Flizzard BA Stout with Oreo.

After landing in Fargo and checking into my hotel, I decided my first stop in the city should be the brewery named for the city.

The entrance is in the far back, so I walked around three sides of the building to get to it. The murals on each side of the building provide reassurance you are going in the right direction. Once you reach the patio, it becomes abundantly clear where you are.

There’s a leased kitchen vendor on the opposite wall from the bar, as well as… a barber shop? I was happy with the current state of my hair, but I felt a food base before barhopping would be a good idea so I got myself a plate of buffalo shrimp.

For my beer flight I had the Wood Chipper (American IPA), Glacial Plains Alsatian Pilsner, Dad’s Session IPA, and Stone’s Throw (Scottish Ale). While ordering I misunderstood something the bartender said and through she said the Stone’s Throw was out, but she reassured me that not only was it in stock, but it would also be very bad news if they ever let it run out.

I had a rather long layover at MSP, so rather than spend it in the airport I decided to look up the closest open brewery along the light rail line. This fit the fill, was open and located just a few stops north of the airport — in fact located right next to the station.

I had the Opulessence Orange Smash (imperial stout) and the No One Cares Brown Ale. And then, because I needed to kill just a little more time and this place is also a coffee shop, I finished off with a mocha latte before hopping the train back to the airport.

We came here for a wine tasting and some appetizers during a weekend camping trip at Watkins Mill.

I had a wine flight with what I think was a moscato (I can’t auite make it out in my photo of the menu), the Sunday Ride Viognier, the Odd-Dry Rosé, and the Shack Creek Red — which we liked enough to buy a bottle of. They also brew their own beer, so I had the Riley’s Stout.

Though thisplace has a lot of outdoor seating, I would hesitate to call it dog-friendly because the dogs who live here roam the grounds freely and spend a lot of their time moving from table to table for pets.

Evergreen Farm Brewing

Our original plan was for our next destination to be Tres Rojas Winery in the nearby town of Washington. But When we were at Old Mill Vineyard, a conversation with another customer revealed to us the existence of a very small brewery we didn’t know about that was located along the way. People at the winery were signing its praises, so we decided to make Evergreen Farm Brewing our next stop instead.

This ended up being one of the more unique breweries I’ve ever been to. The farm has been in the same family since the mid-1800s, originally spanning 225 acres and included vegetable plots and an orchard. Much of the property was sold off in the 1990s, and in 2017 they get the idea to use the remaining acreage to grow ingredients to use in beer and begin a brewing operation.

The tap room is in a tiny building that was originally the farm’s “wash house”, containing a gas-powered washing machine. There is seating for about 5 people. Below, in the cellar, is where the beer is brewed. The brewing operation is so small that of the 9 taps, only 4 were their own beer and the rest were guest taps.

But don’t fear the “seating for 5″, because next door is an old detached garage that has been converted into seating for about 15-20. This building is heated by a wood stove and comes equipped with a wide variety of games to play while you’re having your beer. And in warmer weather (which some people did feel today was “warm enough” there is outdoor seating too.

Since they only had 4 of their own beers, I got a flight of them all: Almost Like Thanksgiving (strong ale, their first brew where nearly every ingredient was grown on their farm), Barn Roof Sledder (winter warmer), Tinsel Vibes (imperial red ale), and Castles Burning (Irish red ale). During which we played a game of Sorry! and I got my ass kicked.

We spent so long here that by the time we were ready to leave the sun was getting low. We decided to skip the other wineries and head back into the city.

When we found out that this brewery was closing for good this weekend, its position on our list moved from “suggestion” to “priority”. So when we realized it was right around the corner from where we ate dinner, and saw they were having a cocktail takeover party meaning there would be something for everyone in our group, we made it our next stop.

Because of the farewell party the place was absolutely packed.
Unfortunately they were out of nearly all the cocktails, so the two in our group who don’t like beer ended up not getting anything.

Once side of the building is the brewery and bar, where food is also served including a weekend brunch. (It’s a full bar, not just beer.) Just outside the bar area is a an even larger, partially-covered patio.

The other side of the facility is an axe-throwing venue that, while partly integrated with the brewery, has to be booked separately.

I had the 2023 Barrel Aged Night Shift Regular (Russian Imperial Stout).

I’ve been wanting to come here for many, many years, so this was definitely the highlight of the day for me. I was in my happy place.

I had the Black Betty Imperial Stout, the MOAB (Mother of All Bettys) (2020), Vanilla Bean Fathead (barleywine), MOAB (Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Aged) (2019), Double Dog Dare (barleywine), and a 6th pour that the bartender gave me that I forgot to record. (I think it was the Wick For Brains, their oktoberfest beer.)

Our plan was to go to two more breweries out this way, but my friend was hitting a wall. So we decided to return to the hotel bar for dinner and then go back to Brickway to have some more there to finish the night. Bust as you already saw in my post about the hotel bar, we ended up enever leaving there.

Upstream Brewing Company

This made sense as out next stop due to being just a few doors over from the previous stop. (Or at least it looked that way, the actual entrance turned out to be around the corner and then another half block.)

The building is a former firehouse, converted to a massive brewery/restaurant. Apart from the large rectangular central bar there are massive seating levels on two levels, plus outdoor seating both on the sidewalk and on a rooftop deck.

My flight consisted of the Steel Cut Stout, the Dundee Export 90 Scotch Ale, Pursuit of Juiciness (NEIPA), and the Capitol (with Simcoe Cask Conditioned) — a pale ale that was a last-moment substitution after the keg blew of whatever I originally wanted in that spot was.

Unfortunately that last second substitution ended up being one of the worst craft beers I’ve ever had. Definitely among bottom ten out of the over 2,700 distinct craft beers I’d had up until then. So unfortunately that’s the memory I was left with. I should have STARTED with that one because any of the other three beers would have ended this visit on a good note!

Since this was directly across the street from Jackson Street Tavern it made sense for this to be our next stop, even after we first detoured a couple blocks west to buy some Ibuprofen.

When we first arrived a tour was getting ready to start so it was a bit hectic, but once the tour group moved to the back it became much calmer.

I was faced with a dilemma. This was the start of the day, so the best strategy would be a few samplings of lower alcohol beers that I was only mildly interested in. But what I really wanted was the Barrel-Aged Epic Blackout Stout, a delicious beast with a powerful 17% ABV but was NOT available in flights. I’d had it before, but never from the source. I really wanted it from the source. So that’s what I chose. And, guess what? The rest of the day would still work out just fine.

At one point I went to use the restroom. Inside the men’s room was a door labeled “employees only”. It was the employee access to the same restroom. That door was also ajar. And I could plainly hear that the tour group was currently gathered right on the other side of that door. I briefly considered the entertainment value of a nice loud fart. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) I just didn’t have it in me.

After an hour delay to go inside caused by them changing their hours in the week since I checked them, I brought my youngest brother here for his 40th birthday.

This is Missouri’s first Black-owned brewery. When the new opening time hit, every car door on Vine opened. Within minutes the brewery went from empty to standing room only on both levels.

I started to order a flight, but then as hey were making it they realized one of the beers I’d asked for were not eligible for flights due to how it needs to be poured. So they called the two they had already poured me “free samples” and I ordered a full pour of their flagship beer. (Jazzman, a black lager, the one that couldn’t be included in a flight.)

The other two beers I tried (the two redeclared as “free samples”) were the East 71 (cream ale) and the Midnight Mississippi (stout).

After we revisited Stone Creek to finish what we ran out of time for yesterday, the rest of the gang was hungry. But I still had unfinished business since I had not been to the local brewery yet, so I split off from the group to come over here myself.

They don’t do flights, but I still wanted to try a couple of different things. U had the Hoppy Vienna Lager and the White Oak Port Porter.

This is a spacious brewery, with three levels + a large outdoor seating area. It’s set up with a self-guided tour.

After our lunch we decided to drive over to Caseville to see the town and try the brewery. The rain was finally tapering off.

Inside was packed so we went outside to sit. Not seeing any obvious signs that there were servers, a couple of us went inside to order drinks only to be shooed back out with a server following us.

I had half pours of the Coconut Porter and the Kona Coffee Stout. I liked the latter so much I ordered a full pour to follow it up.

I bought the group’s rounds and after I paid the final total seemed too low so I asked her to look up the details and reads them back to me. Good thing I did, I had misplaced a decimal point and accidentally tipped just $2 on a $99 tab. I quickly apologized and handed her a twenty. Accidental assholery averted!

I didn’t realize the main tap room closes at 7pm and just barely made it in time to be able to get anything at all on my last night in Juneau.

The tap room is in a plain-looking corrugated steel building in an industrial area, if you were just driving by you might never notice or imagine that such a landmark destination brewery would be located here.

There are two main indoor seating areas, a patio out back, a gift shop, and a walk-in cold beer cave. There’s no food directly, but they do have food trucks (not operating during my visit).

I was too late to be able to get a crowler but did get to enjoy two beers not found back home as well as buy some merchandise. I had the Oaked Amber With Coffee Brown and the Chocolate Cake Stout.

The smallest brewery in Juneau featured a cozy tap room with a handful of tables, a popcorn machine (no other food that I noticed), and a kitty. In accordance with Alaska’s looney brewery laws, no seating permitted at the bar — though in this instance there’s really no room. (It’s also possible this was the brewery where I saw the sign I lost my photo of that listed all the ways Alaska bans fun in breweries.) There is also no outdoor seating, but that’s due to the property not a legal issue.

Rather than get a flight I decided to go with a full pour of the Mittens (Mexican chocolate porter) after reading several comments online about how great it is — it did npot disappoint.

Devil’s Club Brewing

Came in here for a few beers after separating from the rest of the group during a shopping excursion.

For some reason I forgot to take any interior photos except of my flight, but I know they served food and had a merchandise display. There was no apparent outdoor seating.

In accordance with Alaska’s looney brewery laws, there was no seating at the bar counter. I am almost certain that this was the brewery that had a sign listing all the ways Alaska’s brewery laws forbid fun (no NV, no music, no playing games) but I honestly can’t say for sure if that was this brewery or one of the others since that photo has somehow vanished.

I had the Signature IPA, the Cocoroon Imperial Hazelnut-Coconut-Macaroon Pastry Stout, and the Wafel House (Pastry stout brewed with stroopwafel).

Forbidden Peak Brewery

This was the brewery closest to our vacation rental house, and I stopped in here just after opening on a Friday.

This has an expansive seating area both inside and out, with a great view overlooking the bay from both locations. Indoors has a large fireplace for the colder months, a well stocked gift shop, and a separate window in the back for ordering food. In accordance with Alaska’s still-looney brewery laws (even after a 2022 attempt at reform), there is no seating permitted at the bar.

I had the Golden North (pale lager), Statter Oatmeal Stout, Nitro 7 Black (oatmeal stout nitro), Barrel Aged Imperial Brown W/ Cacao Nibs, AukNess (black lager), and Red Spruce (amber ale with locally-picked spruce tips).

Handy tip: Park in the lot on the west side of the building to avoid a lengthy walk of shame around to the correct entrance.

We came across this place while walking around Pike Place Market during a layover and trying to find someplace for lunch we could all agree on. Everyone in the group loved their food, and those of us who got drinks loved those too. (And the pizza in particular was amazing.)

There’s a huge spacious indoor seating area, but absolutely no one was in there because you can’t beat the waterfront patio’s view on a perfect spring day.

I had the fish & chips and a slice of the pizza. For my beverage, I had their Quiet Eon (BA imperial stout).

I saved the biggest for last, with this being my only brewery to visit on this Sunday before heading to the airport.

It was actually supposed to be my second brewery today, I was planning to have brunch at a place called The Freehouse. But I overslept and didn’t have enough time to go get brunch if I was going to also make it to Surly. And perhaps that was for the best — because of a race being run that morning that cut off the direct routes to Surly, the Uber ride took a lot longer than it should have.

I had the Sydney Loves Kevin (Barrel-aged hazelnut stout) and the Port Barrel Aged Stout. I also grabbed a couple of bottles to go to take back home.

Since I missed out on my brunch, I started looking forward to Surly’s pizza that I’d heard so much about. Denied! Only brunch items here on Sunday morning. Unfortunately I’m too finnicky for nearly everything they had, so I just got some bacon to tide me over until the airport.

Because this place was a little out of the way and I had planned on several dive bars earlier in the day, this was on my “only if it’s not getting too late” list. But since I cut that earlier walking dive bar segment due to poor sidewalk conditions, it was still plenty early enough to make this stop.

I had the Banshee Cutter (golden ale) and the Brief Intermission (imperial stout with blueberry and cocoa nibs).

Because I did end up making the decision to come over this way, this wasn’t supposed to be my last brewery of the day. I was supposed to go to the nearby Headflyer Brewing next. But I completely spaced on it, skipping ahead a row when I booked my uber, and didn’t realized I’d missed one until several days later after I was already back home in Kansas City. This became even more annoying when I later realized my Uber away from here drove right by Headflyer, but I didn’t see it so was unable to holler for an unplanned stop.

This brewery is one of several tenants in a larger commercial building, and the common restroom shared by them all must have had some abuse in the past because it’s now protected by an access code available in the brewery.

Much of the menu was stuff I just wasn’t in the mood for at that moment, so rather than getting a few small pours I opted for a full pour of Stout And About (a stout, duh).

This picture was specifically to remind me that yes, there is outdoor seating, but for obvious reasons no one was using it today:

Has the weather been better I’d have just walked here. But there was just too much snow on the sidewalks and road shoulders for me to do that today so I took an almost embarrassingly short Uber ride.

This is a massive German beer brewery with a huge indoor beer hall and a massive covered outdoor area that was getting a lot of use despite the weather.

Even with all that seating, there was no place for me to sit. I had to just kind of find a spot sort of out of the way to stand and drink my beer. Because of this, I opted to have just one beer: Mostly Umlauts (German chocolate stout).

Out in the parking lot three drivers were apparent morons and parked in such a way that created a third row, blocking one of the drive paths and completely boxing in three other vehicles. By the time I left one of those trapped vehicles had managed to escape after a properly-parked car across from it left.

I didn’t need to worry about the parking lot though, as from here it was a short walk to the next place.

This was a massive brewery complex, much larger than I realized for the majority of my visit. I only found the other rooms at the end when i went to use the restroom before departing.

I had the Flavorwave IPA and the Mexican Honey Noir (Mexican dark lager with honey). The later was a substitution when a barleywine that I had been interested in was missing from the tap list. It turned out I should have asked — as I was leaving I saw someone ask for it and they got it. It must have been a special release that wasn’t on the board. Dammit.

Though I remembered to collect stickers as most places, this was the only brewery where I found a shirt in my size that I liked.

This brewery is one that I planned to visit when I was here in 2016, but just never made it.

It was quite crowded, but I was lucky enough to find a single open seat at the bar. I had the Double Cream Coffee Dream (cream ale) and the Peanut Butter Honey Double Trifle Stout (basically a drinkable dessert).

There was a soft serve machine behind the bar that they use for certain beer drinks. Someone to my right ordered one, the bartender went over and looked at the machine, came back shaking her head, then got up on a stool and erased that item from the menu. So I didn’t get to see what that would have been.

Fair State Brewing Cooperative

The last time I had a drink on this block, 1,464 bars ago in August 2006, it was directly across the street from here at a dive bar called Sully’s, and it was definitely quite the opposite experience from what I was visiting now. (Sully’s is now long gone, replaced by a Middle-Eastern bakery/grocery).

This would end up being my favorite of today’s breweries, and if I didn’t have such a long list planned I could have easily spent another hour here.

I had The Purpleest Tooth (imperial stout aged 21 months in port wine barrels) and You Can Have the Crown (imperial stout w/o adjuncts). I would like to have had quite a bit more but I’d have to end the day much much earlier if I did. Consequently, I also missed out on another hour’s worth of puns from one of the bartenders.

From here I revisited NE Palace (last visited August 2006, see that post for the updates). My plan from there was to then “re-visit” Stasiu’s, now known as Stanley’s Northeast Bar Room, from which my plan was to walk to Dangerous Man Brewing by way of Grumpy’s Bar, Jimmy’s Bar & Lounge, and Shaw’s Bar & Grill — all dive bars spaced roughly every 2 blocks along the way. Unfortunately most of the sidewalks had not been cleared and with all the slush I was running low on dry socks to change into, so I sadly decided to cut this walking dive bar crawl and uber directly to the next brewery. I’ll have to try this run again sometime when I’m here in better weather.

Like the previous brewery (which I forgot to mention in my recap of it), this is a co-op, meaning patrons can and do buy shares of ownership in the brewery. Hence this sign (“Drink Like You Own The Place”):

Broken Clock Brewing Cooperative

Had I not rescheduled this trip from its original date of the first weekend of March, I wouldn’t have been able to visit this brewery as it wasn’t open yet. At the time of my rescheduled visit, this place had been open for about 2 weeks. It appears to be the first tenant in an old commercial building that’s in the process of being renovated.

8 to 10 inches of snow had fallen overnight, and getting the roads cleared was apparently taking a lot longer than usual according to the locals. Consequently it took me about 30 minutes to get my Uber ride here, something that had usually taken only a few minutes the previous two days. I got out of my car in one snow drift and had to cross another to get inside. Along the way I lost my glasses in the snow (I still had my sunglasses on so didn’t notice until I was inside and ready to change them) but amazingly was able to find them.

This new brewery is right on the bank of the Mississippi River, and while I was enjoying my beer a group was gathering for a tour event that was being delayed due to so many people running late due to the snow.

I had the Lavender Uprising (IPA infused with lavender), Sweater Weather (porter), and Down By The River (pilsner).

I was supposed to go to 56 Brewing next, but due to the long lead times to get rides (which is why I ended up getting a third beer here) I decided to cut 56 Brewing in favor of the portions of my itinerary that were clumped closer together.

If you look closely you can see the river out the back window. I would imagine that in the future when the weather allows, there will be some sort of outdoor seating here.

Urban Growler Brewing Company

This was supposed to come before Bang Brewing, but I made a last-second switch. Dumb idea. When I first arrived in this area, Urban Growler was not very busy. While I was inside Bang, however, Urban Growler went from being not too busy to an absolute madhouse.

My original plan was to have dinner and a couple of beers here. The huge crowd made it clear that I needed new plans for dinner. As for the beer, I discovered that their menu happened to have a beer offering that was a blend of the two beers I had originally planned to order separately, so I went with that: Dirty Latte (a blend of DeLovely Porter and Vanilla Latte Blonde).

When I finished the beer it was already starting to spit snow, so it was clear the cuts I made earlier in the day were the right move. My Uber got me to my hotel just minutes before the heavy snow started.

Bang Brewing Company

This was originally planned to be my last brewery of the night. It was a late addition, it hadn’t turned up in my early research, it was something I found while panning around in Google Maps. It just looked too cool, the idea of having a beer in an old grain bin.

In a move that I would soon regret, I decided at the last moment to switch the order of this and the brewery next door, which I was originally supposed to visit first. My reasoning was that with the approaching snow, this place might decide to close early and then I’d miss it.

As an old grain bin this is not surprisingly a very small place. Just a couple of spots to sit at the bar and a handful of small tables. In nicer weather there is about 3-4 times the seating space outside on their patio.

Since it was approaching the end of today’s adventure, I decided to treat myself to a full pour of something. I opted for Nice, a Dark Ale.

Black Stack Brewing

This brewery is located inside a giant abandoned factory that has been repurposed into separate spaces for an eclectic assortment of businesses. For instance, across the corridor from here was an indoor mini golf place where all the holes were designed by local artists.

The beers I had were FUGAZI (Italian pilsner), STACKSMAN (American IPA), and WHAT’S THE WIFI PASSWORD? (stout).

My next two breweries were supposed to be Lake Monster Brewing and Dual Citizen Brewing, with two others slated after that. I was keeping a close watch on the approaching snow, however, and it was clear that at best I might be able to get two more breweries in before Id miss my window to get back to the hotel before the blizzard. Since the other two breweries were adjacent to each other (increasing the odds of getting to visit both before I’d have to abandon ship), I painfully cut Lake Monster and Dual Citizen.

Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery

If I can be quite honest for a moment — I don’t actually particularly like the beer styles served here. Under other circumstances I would have skipped this one. So why did I come here? (1) Because it was right around the corner from the previous brewery, and (2) because it looked freaking awesome.

This brewery is more of a restaurant, but there was a very small bar in the back where I plopped down. As I was looking over the beer menu the bartender mentioned that they had just put a new Hefeweizen on, so I went with that, and it was quite good. I neglected, however, to ask for a smaller pour, so what I received meant that I was in for a longer stay than I expected.

An early draft of my itinerary had me continuing southwest from here to Clutch Brewing and Summit Brewing, but I had cut those long ago because they would have prevented me from reaching where I wanted to end the evening before closing time. My new route instead took me west-northwest, with Burning Brothers Brewing as my next planned stop.

Unfortunately, checking the timing of the impending blizzard, it became clear I was going to have to make some cuts if I was going to make it back to the hotel before heavy snow started. Checking the current online tap lists, I made the difficult decision to cut Burning Brothers from the route.

Bad Weather Brewing

Though the location made this a natural choice, the primary reason I picked this brewery was that I liked the name. A name that would soon prove fitting.

Out front was a nice covered patio with a lit fire pit, but it was too gross outside for anyone to be using it. Inside was a long bar with a selection of video games at the far end.

Rather than smaller 5oz samples, I opted for a full pour of a single beer that looked particularly good to me: OMINOUS (an imperial brown ale).

It’s only appropriate that as I was having a beer named OMINOUS in a brewery called Bad Weather Brewing, that I got a new weather alert update that the winter storm warning was now upgraded to a blizzard warning. I realized I was going to have to keep a close eye on the weather and potentially make some tough decisions later.

While I was drinking my beer the bartender was chatting with a guy to my let about someone she knew who lived (or used to live) in St. Louis. The guy to my left made a comment about St. Louis being a shithole and how glad he is to not have to go there anymore. He then added “Same for Kansas City, that place is a shithole too,” I turned to them in mock offence and said “Hay, wait a second, I’m from Kansas City! To which they both laughed and then he said “Well you aren’t there now, so obviously you knew to find something better.”

Gambit Brewing

On Google Maps this was a bit tricky to find, but I eventually determined from photos I found on Google that it’s a basement brewery and once I realized that detail it was a cinch to find the correct building entrance.

I was initially the only person sitting at the bar, which made me slightly anxious that perhaps I wasn’t supposed to be. But eventually someone else “joined me” on the other side of the the box-shaped bar.

Due to a complete lack of cellphone reception I had to wait until I was outside to check my beers in. I had Derry Girl (Irish dry stout) and the Double Stout (imperial oatmeal stout).

As I was drinking my beer I considered backtracking to MetroNOME Brewery since it was getting closer to their opening time. But when I got outside and had reception again, I learned that a winter storm watch expected later in the evening had been upgraded to a winter storm warning. Given that news I decided it was best to stick to my itinerary and not add anything else, so instead of backtracking on foot I got an uber to my next planned destination.

Barrel Theory Beer Company

The first part of today’s walking portion of the adventure was simply a short walk directly across the street.

The walls are adorned with cool murals, and there’s a bank of pinball machines in one corner.

One beer I had been looking forward to was no longer available, but I enjoyed their Behind the Waterfall (imperial porter) and I Can’t Stand the Rain (which proved fitting as it started raining when I left here and I had to get my umbrella out).

Oops: That second beer wasn’t I Can’t Stand The Rain, because it turns out that’s an IPA and most definitely not near-black in color. What did I have, then? Scrolling back through what other people were checking in around that time, it appears my second beer was most likely One Below All (imperial stout).

I would like to have visited MetroNOME Brewery next, as this was as close to it as I would get today, but it didn’t open until 3pm and that was still too far away. So instead of walking southeast I headed off in a southwest direction in a chilly light rain.

Yoerg Brewing

I put this brewery on my list due to its age (founded 1848), making it the oldest brewery in Minnesota. What I didn’t know until I got here is that it also has an astounding inventory of well-curated European beers.

There was a bit of a communication breakdown when I tried to place my order. Before I even arrived I had already pre-selected two beers I wanted to try, as I was trying to keep it to 2-3 5-oz pours per brewery in order maintain my liver through today’s itinerary. But as soon as I said “5 ounce” the bartender (who I think was also the owner) shut me down and made me get a complete flight because he didn’t want to keep making me 5oz pours despite my protest that the two I had asked for were all I wanted. Oh well, the beer was all good, so I decided to go with it and find someplace else later to drink less beer to offset this requirement. (Spoiler alert: that never happened, I drank my full allotment or more everywhere.)

I had the Yoerg’s Beer (their flagship lager) and the Black Forest Lager (dark lager), and also added the Yoerg’s Picnic (pilsner) and one of their guest European beers, the Pays d’Erpigny by Brouwerij Alvinne (barleywine) to round out the flight.

My first stop of this day was something absolutely spectacular!

Originally named Flat Earth Brewing, this brewery first opened in 2007 in the renovated ruins of a former Hamm’s plant. In 2019 it renamed to the current name.

The building is absolutely beautiful inside and out. As I was leaving I discovered another huge seating area in another room, which explained why I couldn’t originally find enough people inside to explain the full parking lot.

Even though it was unusable today due to heavy snow and lots of ice, the patio is absolutely amazing. It’s built in the partially-collapsed ruins of the former Hamm’s stables.

Beer-wise, I tried their Shamm’s (American lager), Crook’s Haven (English porter with rye), and Black Helicopter Coffee Stout.

As I left I noticed there was also a distillery in the same complex, but I had a long day of beer planned that I would be unable to complete if started adding spirits to the mix.

After walking the past several breweries, it was back to an Uber ride for this one. I started to get a second wind here so I really had to restrain myself hard from ordering more than I did because there were so many interesting choices.

I had the Drops of Time (barleywine) and the Bourbon Barrel Aged Lost Moon (2022)(BBA imperial stount). There were at least 3 more on the menu I wanted but I had to force myself to be good.

It was too dark (and rainy) for me to tell for sure but I think the patio might overlook the Mississippi River.

Modist Brewing

Modist Brewing reminded me enough of Fulton Beer that I had to double check to make sure I hadn’t wandered back to the wrong place by mistake. (Though that would have been a tough feat since Modist is right across the street from Bricksworth.)

I had the Honeycomb Catacomb (honey porter) and the Ritual Night (2022) (Mexican dark chocolate stout), and sadly that’s about all I remember about this place because I was pretty hammered.

I had picked this place out for dinner weeks before this trip because the pizza looked good and because of its location.

Along with my pizza I had the Trick Question, a DIPA, brewed by Bricksworth Beer. I didn’t even know until I saw it on the menu that they had their own beer.

BTW if you visit here immediately after 13 beers at 6 prior breweries and you get up to go use the restroom, leave a trail of breadcrumbs because the restrooms are not in the restaurant but elsewhere in the building and I got so lost coming back.

I had the Contains Bees: Peanut Butter Honey Blonde and a Thundersnow (Winter Warmer). Though I am now starting to wonder if I was poured the wrong thing instead of the Thundersnow, because nobody else with check-ins for that beer in the weeks before or after my visit mention it tasting buttery like it did for me.

I had the Local Dawn (imperial stout) and the More Than A Trace (imperial stout aged in Buffalo Trace/Templeton Rye barrels).

This brewery is located in a former theater, and is two doors over from a bar that I visited in 2016. So if it was open back then, I’m sorry I missed it but at least I got to visit it now.

The TV was not on the ball game here, but I heard cheers erupt nonetheless and had to look up to see what was happening. It was the “TRUMP INDICTED” ticker scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

Supposedly the burgers are really good here, but I was still full from my airport BBQ back in KC and besides I had a dinner place already picked out for a few hours later.

I had the Take 6 (American IPA), Rubbish Oat Amber, and the Shadows in the Dark (imperial stout).

This brewery wasn’t on my intended list because it was too far from the area I wanted to concentrate on today. But because I got off to such an earlier than planned start, I realized while I was at Finnegan’s that I had plenty of time to make a side trip here.

This was a slightly challenging brewery to find. It’s located in some sort of massive indoor marketplace, something I’ve seen in a couple of other cities but that we don’t have back home. The huge building had multiple entrances and the Uber driver had no idea which to drop me off at, so I just picked one figuring I’d find the place eventually. I ended up wandering around inside for several minutes before I finally found it. (Because of this, the exterior photo above was actually taken last, when I left.)

I had the Tsathoggua (don’t ask me how to pronounce that — an imperial stout) and the Tsathoggua Special Infusion Ancho Chile & Fudge

The Royals home opener game was on (or because of where I was, probably more accurate to say the Twins away opener game was on), and based on the amount of cheers that kept erupting I didn’t even have to look up to know that the Royals were getting their asses kicked.

Because I didn’t initially notice this brewery when I was planning this trip, I added it at the last minute as a possible first stop “only if I get to my hotel and get checked in before 5pm”.

Apparently it was meant to be, because:

My plane landed 20 minutes early.

I walked directly to baggage claim and the bags started coming down as soon as I got there.

My bag was the second one to come down the ramp.

My taxi encountered zero traffic on the way to the hotel.

Along the way I checked into the hotel through the app so walked straight to my room.

So, after getting unpacked and settled in, it was only 3:30 and I had plenty of time to add Finnegan’s!

I had the Irish Amber since that seems to be their flagship beer, and the Dead Irish Poet (Cork-style stout.)

We stopped in here for lunch before heading back to Kansas City with the car-load of beef we had just bought from a Pennsylvania farmer that we rendezvoused with at a truck stop just outside Toledo.

I had a massive strip of fried walleye and their Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout.

As it wasn’t too busy only the main level was open, but as I explored the space I found there’s an even larger dining room upstairs that also had a full bar. There’s also outdoor seating in the courtyard.

The men’s room had a single urinal mounted only inches above the floor, I opted to not use it out of fear of making a terrible mess.

My friend is a huge fan of Supernatural, and co-star Jensen Ackles is one of the owners here so we had to visit even though we knew the odds of running into him here would be very slim.

This place definitely takes the award in terms of the beauty/serenity of its outdoor seating area. The pics don’t do it justice. And, like Jester King, it also has a playground for the kids. There’s also a permanent food truck outside making pizza.

After a late morning swim at Barton Springs followed by a nap, we rented a car to head to a few breweries outside of town.

Our first stop was Jester King, which was insanely busy and offered is a bit of a challenge to even be able to park.

The system here is a bit weird, but I get it. It would be way too easy to lose track of people in such an expansive complex without requiring check-in and hand stamps. As hot as it was I would have much preferred being inside the Brew House, but it was closed so the Pole Barn was as close to comfortable air as we could get. (The misting sprays helped somewhat though also added to the humidity.)

We were too hot to explore the grounds but there was a goat herd somewhere, a vineyard, and a playground for the kids. Oh and I got to pee in an Airstream converted into a restroom.

We had some brisket, and I had the English-style Summer Ale and the Bitter Death (Belgian ale).

One of my friend’s childhood friends lives in Austin and works at Pinthouse Pizza, but at a location so far away we didn’t think it would be possible to meet up. But as it turned out while we were having out tour at theChive, he was at a meeting at the massive Pinthouse Brewing HQ facility just a few miles from us. So we headed on over there.

This brewery is truly massive, and is where I learned that the Electric Jellyfish I had over at theChive is what they are best known for.

There was a dog adoption event underway, and the place was packed with humans and canines of all types.

We ended up hanging out here for at least a couple of hours while my friend and his friend caught up. During this time my stomach started to get upset, so I ordered a pizza assuming it was hunger. But I could barely get any of it into me and I realized the electric jellyfish was not getting along with my belly. This would end up affecting me for the remainder of the day.

I had the Bearded Seal (stout) and the Cosmic Lust IPA, though both were a struggle the way my stomach was feeling.

This was a bit confusing at our arrival, because the place we got dropped off looked nothing like the pictures we’d seen and had a different name. It turns out there are multiple businesses here sharing the same outdoor common area.

(I can’t figure out what neighborhood to classify this as. It seems to be outside of Downtown, and the closest matches for neighborhoods seem to be Clarksville or Old West Austin but Google disagrees.)

Due to being located right across the highway from the airport, this was our first stop on a four-day weekend getaway. We were a bit embarrassed about brining our luggage here with us, but it turns out that customers with luggage is pretty normal here and we were far from the only customers with suitcases.

The beer is largely German style. I don’t know if there was bar seating pre-covid but as of August 2022 there were no stools at the long bar. Seating is at large picnic tables inside or at picnic tables out on the patio or scattered throughout the grounds. The ground appear to include a disc golf course.

I had the HefeWeizen, the Grodziskie (a smoked Polish beer), the Pilz (what they are best known for), and the Big Bark Amber Lager.

This is a pretty fascinating brewery build right on the wharf overlooking the Columbia River. A glass bottom in the brewery floor gives visitors a few of sea lions lounging below. Outside seating provides stunning views of the waterfront.

I had the Love Lost At Sea 2022 (barleywine) and the Industry Standard (stout). I also bought a few bottles of past years’ Love Lost at Sea to take home.

We found out about this distillery complex less than a week before COVID lockdowns started in early 2020 and were anxious to visit, but then forgot about it by the time things re-opened and it was only due to needing to pick up a bottle of gin that we suddenly remembered and decided to pay them a visit.

There are actually four bars throughout the complex — one on each level plus one outside. The outdoor bar was closed for the winter, and since we were on a shopping trip we decided to stick with just the tasting room for today’s visit and check out the other bars in the future when we have more time.

This is a bit of a unique find that had only been open for a few weeks. This is technically a production-only brewery and does not have a license for on-side consumption. However it is on the grounds of an equine therapy ranch that has event space, and that ranch does have a license for on-site consumption. So, if you want to drink your beer here, you can do so on the patio on Saturday afternoons. The trick is they have to pour it into a can, seal the can, then once you take thge can you can drink it on the patio or at the picnic tables around the corner. Otherwise their beer is to-go only.

This was supposed to be our last stop on a brewery crawl back in August, but full stomachs forced us to cut that day short.

This is a baseball themed brewery in a light industrial warehouse area on the western edge of Edwardsville.

I had the Shortstop Hop IPA, At ‘Em Amber, Bullet Rogan Rye, and The Monarch (dark lager).

UPDATE (Jan 5, 2022): I have learned that they are closing at this location and as of January 14, 2022 will be joining Own Agenda Brewing in the Olde Mill Building in Bonner Springs.

We decided to spend an afternoon hanging out at a winery, which turned out to also have mead and their own craft beer. After out drinks we walked over to the flower garden and spend about half an hour hanging out with all the bees.

I had the Sparkle Beach (fizzy cider with glitter), Rhythm & Blues (currant-blueberry mead), Grateful Head (mango-habanero mead), Double Punk Monk IPA by Brose Brewing (their partner in-house brewery), and a John Lemon (lemon mead).

They have quite a few of their own brews, plus an extensive guest tap list. I stuck with their own beer, having the New Beginnings (American IPA), Sticky Knife Peanut Butter Porter, and Old Fashioned Barleywine.

The tasting room is a long narrow space with a lengthy bar counter at one end and tables at the other end.

There was grill set up out front and the brewery was trying desperately to give away free bratwurst with purchase of a full pour, but as it was about 2:30 in the afternoon no one coming in was hungry.

I had the Salted Caramel (imperial milk stout), White Chocolate Torte Wheatwine, and Cerberus (Belgian Strong Golden Ale).

This was our second NEW venue of the day, but because of two last minute additions it was already our fourth stop.

My in-dash navigation led me stray, taking me to the south side of 150 into a residential neighborhood behind QuikTrip. Handy tip: It’s on the NORTH side of 150, behind the Harley dealership.

This is a brewery that opened and also saw a good portion of its ground-up construction take place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it shows in the design. With a lengthy from wall entirely of garage doors and a spacious patio plus lots of outdoor activities, they put a lot of effort into bringing in fresh air and spreading people out over a large area. At the time of our visit a dog park was even in the works.

As a food option, there is an attached café called The Chive.

They focus on session beers, so you can enjoy the flavors and not worry so much about the after-effects. I had the Lay Back Amber Ale and the Tippin’ Stout. I also had a taster of their California Common right before leaving, which was the best example of that style I’d ever tasted.

I later added on a Dank Skies American IPA), and got a can of Stay Ahead Of The Wind (Farmhouse Ale brewed in collaboration with Big Rip Brewing) that I drank a couple of weeks later.

We next made a stop at East Forty Brewing because my brother had never been and I wanted to try their take on Black Is Beautiful.

I’ve known of this place a little while, never was quire sure where it was located. From the outside, you’d never guess there was a brewery here.

The front/main room was extremely packed, with barely enough toom to get to the register and order. Luckily there is additional seating back in the warehouse where the beer is made. It was craawling with kids, but there were at least a few open tables.

Despite the crowd, noise, and children, this was the highlight of today’s trip and I think I can safely say it’s among the very best breweries in the KC area.

There is food, though I think it’s provided by third parties. It was tacos and cookies during our visit, unsure if that’s the normal menu or if it rotates.

I had Rum Cake Russian Imperial Stout, Strong & Sweet (sweet stout), Issues (stout), and Barleywine w/Judeâ€™s Rum Cake — which was the best thing I imbibed all day.

The tap room is spacious/cavernous, and when it’s crowded like tonight it’s rather loud. There’s a BBQ food truck in the back.

I had Elaine Rye Porter, Pretty Potion (witbier) — which looked a little scary but ended up being my favorite of the three, and Melissa (oatmeal stout).

There’s a sidewalk patio, but it was way too cold to use it today.

I wanted to come here during our 2018 visit but couldn’t work it in. So I’m glad our unexpected layover gave us another chance!

This is one of the coolest brewery tap rooms I’ve ever been to, and the beer is fantastic.

I had a Time Waits For No One (Imperial Stout), which was very thick and boozy and delicious.

When we arrived I noticed that King Street Brewing was less than a block away. By the time we finished at Anchorage Brewing, the high ABV of my stout caused me to completely space on King Street. So, I have yet another reason to return to Alaska again!

Any unexpected long layover in Anchorage, combined with a tip from someone that they have really god pizza, led to us visiting 49th State Brewing’s other location. (We had visited the Denali location in 2018, and coincidentally driven by that one again yesterday.)

In addition to fantastic food and beer this location features lots of TVs, multiple levels of seating including a large rooftop deck, and a big fireplace in the main dining area.

I had their Whiskey Barrel Aged Cabin Fever with my pizza.

This is one that I was unable to make it to the last time I was in Fairbanks, so I was glad to get another chance! (Little did I know it was right across the street from the train station I had used in our previous visit.)

They have a really nice patio out front with a fire pit. Despite it being snowy and dark we stayed outside, it was quite pleasant and the snow kept the beer cold.

I had their XPA, their IPA, their Vanilla Porter, and ther Stout.

After the exhibit I went to see at the Crystal Bridges art museum, the final things on my itinerary before it was time for me to head home was Onyx Coffee Lab and Bike Rack Brewery – 8th Street Tap Room.

I headed to Onyx and found it… virtually impossible to get to due to some sort of big outdoor event. So I decided to skip that and go to Bike Rack. But I’d already been to two other Bike Rack locations, and meanwhile I was feeling a sense that I would regret it if I didn’t give Saddlebock another try. So even though I was now about as far from zsaddlebock as it was possible to get and still be in this metro area, I decided to backtrack the 15-20 or so miles to go check it out.

This time when I arrived, it was both open and busy! Still, the staff was very willing to help me as a newcomer understand their selections.

On-site I had their IPA and their Irish Red. I also bought a bottle of their chocolate stout to-go for myself, and a bottle of their Hefeweizen for a friend.

So remember how in the previous entry I said I wasn’t in the mood for cider? Well here’s what happened with that.

After I finished at Bike Rack I drove a few miles to Macadoodle’s (a liquor store) to buy some regional beer to take home. By the time I finished there, it was time for Saddlebock Brewery to open. So a drove all the way out to the country and arrived there. Yes! Another place where I was the first customer of the day. Except wait, there’s no employee vehicle. The door was locked. Checked Facebook, and found a post made earlier that morning stating that they would be opening late. Crap. I was on a timetable, so so much for getting to visit Saddlebock on this trip.

I returned to town and it was still going to be quite a while before any other brewery on my list would be open. My route took me past Black Apple Crossing, and I began to feel guilty, and worried I’d regret it later if I didn’t visit every single craft establishment I possibly could. So I parked and went inside.

Thank god I did…. because I had no idea I was about to experience the BEST DAMN CIDER OF MY ENTIRE LIFE.

The tasting room is in the far back, behind the restaurant area, and there’s a good sized patio behind that. The credit card system was down so they offered me my cider for free, but I had cash so I would have none of that nonsense.

I had the Barrel Aged 1904 and the, oh sweet Jesus this was so amazingly good: the Hibiscus cider. That one was so good I got a 4-pack to go!

This dog-loving brewery with a dachshund mascot is easy to find, not so easy is noticing which door is the main entrance. A least not when you arrive 15 minutes before opening. The bartender arrived about 5 minutes after I did, I have her until a few minutes after official opening before I came in and started pestering her for beer.

I didn’t want a full flight, but I also didn’t want pints, and she seemed confused by my request for 5oz tasters. So I decided to just go with half-pours and call it a day. I later wound up with a third half-pour due to a mis-pour.

This is a sprawling facility with all sorts of activities. There’s a patio in the front and another on the east end between two of the buildings, and outside the west end before the next building on the other side is a fenced dog play area.

I had the Hazelnut Brown, the Arkansas Red Ale, and the Toasted Coconut brown ale.

They were having a pet adoption event at 1:00 and I really wanted to stay to see the pups, but I had a ticket for a special exhibit at Crystal Bridges for 1:30 up in Bentonville so I had to miss out on the doggies.

Originally this place wasn’t even on my list, and my first stop of the day was supposed to be Black Apple Crossing. But when I woke up I just wasn’t in the mood for cider. I wanted coffee, and I (reluctantly, after the previous day) wanted beer. So I swapped this place in instead.

There were foot trucks out back and it looked like a couple of picnic tables. In the photos below, check out the really sweet retro gaming room.

In addition to coffee I had the Guilded Maple (Belgian Quad) and the ANGUS CHUTE Oatmeal Stout.

West Mountain Brewing Company

This should have been a 5-minute walk from the previous brewery.

But my Uber ride to Crisis Brewing followed a different route from what I had expected when I studied the map earlier.

Oh, and by now I was drunk.

So as soon as I stepped out of Crisis Brewing I was disoriented, and immediately started off in the wrong direction.

A wrong direction that happened to be downhill. Unbeknownst to me, I needed to have been going uphill.

After about 15 minutes I realized I really should have been there by now and that nothing looked right. I checked the map and saw how far off course I was. I turned around and started backtracking uphill. Staggering and swaying. With constant oncoming traffic that caused me to feel like everyone driving past was laughing at me.

I’m not sure the exact route I took, but I finally found the downtown square. But my now I was seriously turned-around from the direction I’d expected to enter the square.

I finally found the block West Mountain Brewing was on, but I couldn’t find a business by that name. I circled all the way around the block looking for it. Finally, almost back where I started.

That’s when I saw a sign for Tiny Tim’s Pizza, and I remembered that both places shared the same Facebook page. So I went on inside and had a seat at the bar.

“We’re closing up,” the bartender said, “but you can follow that hallway around and go to the place next door.” In retrospect, after figuring out that it was only about 8:45pm on a Saturday night, I’m unsure whether he was telling the truth or just didn’t want to deal with the obviously drunk guy.

I made my way to the back of the restaurant and turned down the hallway. After a stop to use the restroom I continued down the hall and found myself, finally, in the actual West Mountain Brewing.

What should have been a 5-minute walk of maybe about a thousand feet had turned into 40 minutes and well over a mile. But I was finally here!

Alas, they did not do flights. So I found the one beer I figured I’d enjoy the most, their Irish Stout, to have as my point. It was a very, very, very slow pour, but it was worth the wait.

I also had a small pizza (ate the whole thing), and in chatting with the bartender we found out we both grew up in the same neighborhood back in the KC suburbs, although separated in time by 20+ years. That was pretty cool.

When I left I turned around to take the picture of the front and discovered one of the reasons I had trouble finding it even once I’d arrived on the block, the sign was unlit and in the shadows.

I had originally intended to go to three more places in the square, but I was still coherent enough to know that I needed to be done. When I hit the Uber button I failed to notice just how close she was, so even though I immediately stepped out the door and took the picture of the front, when I turned to look down the street waiting for her arrival I was startled by a tap of the horn and whirled around to see her already parked in the spot right next to where I was standing.

I didn’t realize that this was such a short distance from the previous brewery, so I apologized to the Uber driver for such a short trip. There was a private party underway in the back room, and this place was hopping both inside and out. I was able to find a spot sitting at a barrel that had a really high stool forcing me to hunch over to pick up each snifter.

Of course, two sips into the first beer, I had to use the restroom. I was relieved (after I was relieved) to return and find my flight still there as I had no one with me to guard it.

I had the Orange Cream Ale, the T-Rex Tripel, the IPA #3, the La Brea Brown, and the Oatty Stout.

This was the beginning of my downfall. I remember everything about my visit here right up to taking my empty glassware back to the bar. I remember my Uber pulling into the parking lot, I remember nothing about the actual ride to the subsequent brewery except that I couldn’t get my seatbelt to latch so, just like in a similar infamous incident in Madison, WI a few years ago, I held it in place with my hand like a drunken idiot.

Boston Mountain Brewing Company

This new establishment (I think they had been open about 3 months) is a little hard to find. My Uber driver had to circle around a couple of times before I finally spotted it. This is also the last brewery I went to this day where I could still consider myself to be sober. While I have no blackouts and remember details about each subsequent brewery, everything from this point on has a lot of blurring.

I had the Coconut Porter, the Coffee Stout, the Chocolate Sweet Stout, and the Robust Porter. I lost track of the order in which they were poured but they were each distinct enough in flavor it was obvious which was which despide them all being the exact same color.

By now I’d checked into my hotel, and was now on the Uber portion of the day.

This place felt more like a restaurant than a brewery, and in many ways reminded me of the similarly-named Little Apple Brewing in Manhattan, KS.

Initially I was a little disappointed, as they were out of a few of their beers. I ended up just getting a point of the Hazy Morning Coffee Stout.

But then, as I was preparing to pay, I noticed a not-yet-erased beer name that I had missed on the chalk board around the corner. I asked about it, and sure enough they still had just a little left. The Old Boggy Barrel Aged 2019 that I then received totally redeemed this place in my eyes.

Bentonville Brewery is not currently located in Bentonville, but they will be by the end of December 2019. I don’t know the story but apparently they had at some point in the past had to move from their original location, so they took up residence in a metal warehouse.

They have made damn good use of the space they have. In terms of atmosphere, this was my favorite stop of the day.

I’m marking them as having outdoor seating, though technically it’s indoor. But the huge open garage door makes it just as good as outdoor.

I had the Lil’ Wrecker (American IPA) and the Natural State Porter. The Lil’ Wrecker was actually a mispour, I’d actually asked for the Homewrecker, but I didn’t want her to waste beer so I went with it.

Ok, I absolutely HAD to force myself to be good here and not get a flight, due to all of the high ABVs found here. But it was really hard to be good. I ended up buying some crowlers to take home.

While here I had the 2019 Anniversary Blend (70% BA Foeder Stout, 30% Not For The Faint aged futher in a cognac cask), and the Not For The Faint itself (barleywine aged with vanilla beans).

I also sampled the Vanilla Cryotherapy (milkshake IPA) and the Oksymarzen (wheat wine) before buying crowlers of them to bring home as souvenirs.

Route-wise this should not have been my next brewery, but because it was still early in the day I had to do a little backtracking due to opening times. That’s okay, I hadn’t had breakfast yet so the food truck outside provided me with a much-needed lunch.

It doesn’t look it from my photos, but there were probably around 20 people here. There’s just quite a bit of room (inside and out) for them to spread out.

I had the Onyx Coffee Stout, The Momentary Lager (made with honeysuckle and elderflower, a collaboration with a local art museum), their IPA, and their Cream Stout.

While I was eating my lunch I scooted my flight off to the side. Butsomeone came in and sat down beside me, so I had to scoot my flight back out of his way as he sat down. A moment later he asked the bartender, “Do you have flights?”

I was impressed with New Province from the moment I went inside, and after the first two 5oz pours it became clear that my “absolutely no flights today” rule was going to be a lost cause at only my second stop of the day.

I had the Philosopher King (American IPA), Commoner (Kentucky Common), Lavish (Lavendar IPA) and Yeoman (Coffee Porter).

Bike Rack Brewing: The Experiment

This is a teeny-tiny brewery attached to the neighboring Pedaler’s Pub (which I didn’t visit due to wanting to focus on breweries today).

There’s only a couple of spots at the bar, and seating for maybe 10-12 (depending on size) over in the seating area. At a 6’3″ behemoth, it was a bit of a challenge for me. The outdoor seating area doubles the available space, but it was too cold this particular morning to sit outside.

There are three Bike Rack locations, and this one focuses on small batch brews. I had the Devil’s Den Double IPA and the Patch Kit (Ambler lager).

This cool little brewery was a bit smaller than I was expecting, but it has a patio that about doubles the space. There’s a food truck parked off to the side, but I didn’t check it out.

It was rather busy in there, when I first arrived I took the only open space at the bar. Around the corner from me a guy around my age was schooling another guy about half his age on the pop culture of the ’70s. The bartender was fun to converse with.

My flight contained their 10 OClock Oktober Fest, Turkey Creek Bitter, The Oronogo Circle IPA, and Old #60 Brown Ale.

Theoretically Brewing Company

My first brewery (or bar for that matter) in Canada, and since it’s the only brewery I visited in Canada I don’t know if this is the norm or a peculiarity to this place. There’s no actual bar per se. You order and pay at the register when you first come in, then you take a seat anywhere you want and they bring it to you when it’s ready.

There’s a small amount of seating along the window in the front room with the cash register / gift shop, and a larger room in back. There is also plenty of seating on the patio.

Flights are served in test tubes, which was fun. I had their Curiosity Ale, Frequency Hopper (IPA), Fomenko’s Chronology (raspberry sour), and BHB (stout).

When we first pulled up I was a little worried, It looked like potentially a slightly dicey neighborhood, and the building could just as easily be a dive bar (and may have even been at one time for all I know). But the beer contained within is some of the best I’ve found in the wild.

I had The Fluffer: Session IPA, Blueberry DRIPA, Penetration Porter, American Barleywine, Imperial Créme Brûlèe Java Stout. I even ended up buying some more beer to-go.

I unbderstand this place is also known as “Conference Room K”, but I won’t way why so no one gets in trouble.

When I first stepped in here and saw the beer list I had to ask the bartender how to tell which was what they brew and which were the guest taps. Nope, it’s all them! They brew a lot of beer.

From the industrial park outside, you’d never guess that the inside is all done up very well in a medieval theme. I didn’t notice if they have food, I was too caught up in the beer and the decor. They do have several dart boards (traditional style).

I had their Woody’s Perfect Porter, Dubbel Dragon (Belgian dubbel), Reverend Fred’s Oatmeal Stout, Under the Kilt (Scottish Ale), and Russian Imperial Stout

So I had the Solo Hike (IPA).

Since it was closing and we were infringing on their time, I didn’t really get to learn much or explore the place, other than to find a new contender for the title of Coolest Bathroom Sinks Ever.

This is a very cool tap room, and in addition to having good beer of their own, they have several guest taps as well.

There was outdoor seating in the back, and a food truck around the side. Interesting discovery: the men’s room is neat and clean while the women’s is absolutely covered in graffiti.

I had their Super Fantastic (IPA) and Super Duper Fantastic (Inperial IPA). From the guest taps I also had Likewise Lager by Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, Nimble Giant (Imperial IPA) by Tröegs Independent Brewing, and Scenario (Porter) by Melvin Brewing

The bar top is made of “All of the buckshot Walmart had available that day.”

This brewery is located on a former military installation (Air Force, I think?) and consequently was rather tricky to find. Even the GPS was tripped up.

The taproom is small but works well, and the outdoor seating area doubles the available space. You have to walk through the tank room to get to the restrooms, just follow the path.

This was the first stop of a mini brewery crawl. Having a restaurant attached next door (accessible through the brewery as well) made this a good place to start out and get a base layer of food down.

I’ve had their beer several times, but this was my first visit to the brewery. We rolled in late — pretty close to closing time — but we were still able to get some appetizers and drinks in!

This is a magnificent tap room in a large, historic building.

I had their King Arthur’s Court Imperial IPA, Rambler’s Red Ale, A Wee Bit Foggy Scotch Ale, and Passport To Russia (Imperial stout). Mark Twain would have been pleased when them all.

Not technically in Valley Junction, but close enough that it’s the best way to describe it. Located in a business park nearby.

We were definitely the first customers of the day because the bartender hadn’t unlocked the door yet when we pulled on it.

We were both a little hung over and didn’t move around much. Which is a shame because I later found out I missed not only the patio, but a loft area upstairs that overlooks the brewing area.

I had their Cluster FÃ¼chs (hefeweizen) and their Jack n the Bean (BBA Scottish Ale with vanilla and coffee).

This is a brand new brewery, only open for a few weeks at the time of our visit, directly across the street from Peace Tree. It’s owned by three brothers, and inside the tap room the build what I believe to be a replica of their childhood home.

I had their Irish Red and their Coffee Stout.

There were a couple of tables outside, but it was unclear if you could take drinks out there.

From here we went to Iowa Taproom (where we ate again before calling it a night. But I have that already logged in here from an earlier visit.

There were a crap-ton of cyclists here. And, despite the rainbow banners outside, in one corner was a small group of very young kids wearing t-shirts that gave them impression they were from a pray-the-gay-away cult.

The tap room is nicely done, though as a first time visitor I was intimidated stepping in the door and finding myself immediately at the ordering counter. I had to wander away for a bit to figure out what I wanted.

I had their Nitro Cold Brew Coffee Stout and their Catwalk Swagger (pilsner).

Though I’ve had some of their beer before, this is my first visit to an Iowa brewery. I had the Double Dry Hopped South Side Citra W/ Tangerine And Orange Peel, the Royal Roots Porter, the Camp Fire Black Lager (Port Barrel Aged), and one of the greatest beer experiences of all time, the Anniversary Porter 2014.

BTW the staff here was extremely friendly and helpful.

We found out our next stop, Exile, was not open yet after all due to the holiday. So we took off east instead of west, intending to have lunch at the Iowa Taproom, but we got distracted along the way…

This brewery in downtown Independence sits under the watchful eye of President Harry S Truman (seen outside in one of the photos below). It’s a rather large and nicely-decorated tap room built into a flea market building.

They were out of a few of their beers when we arrived, but I found enough to make a flight out of. I had the Cali Rush 9American IPA), In Control (Session IPA), Kaimanawa (Kai) Express (lager), and What A Ride (Irish dry stout).

Give ‘em hell, Harry! (You can see him in the upper left corner.)

The restroom is quite a trek around back of the flea market, so don’t wait until you can’t hold it! If you are male, the journey is rewarded with a pair of delightful beer keg urinals.

A newcomer to the area but the first brewery in Independence, Apex Aleworks is the result of an existing home brew supply store expanding into an adjacent retail space to start a brewery of their own.

Handy tip: Make sure you get a paper beer menu. On our visit it had a few more beers that were not on the wooden wall menu.

There’s a popcorn machine in the corner and a shuffleboard in the corridor between the tap room and the retail store.

I had their New Independence Pale Ale, Coconut Milk Stout, Tootsie Pop Porter (delicious), and English Mild.

I had never heard of this place, but it came recommended by an Internet Stranger who had been here before. We were all back at the AirBNB and the gang was working on a huge dinner. But it was a small kitchen, and I reasoned “They don’t really need six people crammed in here,” so I hopped in an uber and headed out in the intermittent monsoons to check it out.

If you were just driving by, you’d probably never notice the place. It’s a nondescript storefront in a nondescript building in a very vibrant neighborhood.

I just got myself two half-pours, because my plan was to just have a quick visit here and then check out one or two of the other bars nearby. But OH MY GOD this beer was so good that I got two more. And then another one after that. I ended up using up all of my available time here.

I had their Sea Foam (pineapple / passion fruit / blue spirulina sour), Vanilla Drinking Chocolate (imperial stout), Caramel Rainbow (milk stout), Orbital Motion (IPA), and Cheap Cologne (Brut IPA).

After 14er we decided it was time to head back to the hotel for a break, but were in a phone signal dead zone and had to start walking. Finally we got to an area with signa, but there were no Ubers to be found AT ALL. Eventually we found ourselves in front of 10 Barrel, and we decided to go on inside in the hopes that we could keep trying to get an uber someplace away from the sun.

I had the Biggie Smalls (Irish Stout) and the Koko Head (Coffee Stout).

After we finished here we were still unable to get an uber, so we exited through the back in order to make our way over to Larimer Street in hopes of maybe being able to flag down a cab if nothing else. After another block or two, though, an available uber finally appear and we snagged that bad boy. (I would later find that if we’d walked one more block west before finding that uber, it would have taken less time to just keep walking the rest of the way back to the hotel.)

Because the heat was starting to make us feel miserable, we skipped ahead of our initial planned route a little bit (missing Ratio and Our Mutual Friend) and came here next.

There’s a long bar area in the front, then another room in the back (where the stacks of canned beer are). There wasn’t any outdoor seating per se, but this back room is practically outdoor seating when the garage door is open.

I had the Mt Massive IPA and the Double Mt Massive IPA. Unless the bartender accidentally switched them (which I can’t rule out), I thought the single was the richer and stronger of the two.

The walk here from Black Shirt seemed a lot longer than it really was, this was largely due to the fact that it had heated up to a blistering 95 degrees.

This same heat indirectly led to this tap room visit not being as fun as it should have been. The interior was absolutely packed, to the point where it was nearly impossible to get to the bar to order anything. Fortunately a server found us in the crowd and was able to take our order and get our drinks back to us.

To escape the claustrophobic conditions inside we went out to the patio and sat under the blazing hot sun. At first we were the only idiots out there doing that, but eventually several of the other tables filled up as people trickled out to escape the mayhem inside.

This was probably my favorite of the Denver breweries we visited on this trip. A very small but fun tasting room that made good use of the small space, a beer garden in front, a nice selection of beer varieties that were all excellent, and a great bartender.

I had the The Golden Child (Golden Porter, which I’d never heard of before) and the Malt Licker (Old Ale). After I finished those I had to also order a Hef Goldblum (Hefeweizen) based soley on its art on the menu board.

After a very annoying Uber ride (that took absolutely FOREVER to show up despite originating 4 blocks away, and the n the driver’s GPS wasn’t working so he was relying on us out-of-towners for directions), we made it here as our next starting point.

I had their Rare Trait (NEIPA), which was good, but even better was the sciencey decor. I particularly liked the logo that combined a hop and a brain (even though that fact needed pointed out to me) and the wall papered with pages from science text books.

There are a lot of places we wanted to go to in Boulder that we regret not having the time for, we picked this one almost at random from a few finalists as the one other Boulder place we’d get to go to.

Like Avery, this was also located in an office park. But the setting seemed even more out-of-place, we almost didn’t see it and were sure our GPS had led us to the wrong spot. Until we spotted some guys who looked like beer drinkers getting off some bicycles, the setting looked more like where you’d go to get blood work drawn.

I didn’t notice any outdoor seating, but it’s possible there was some in the back.

I had their Out of Bounds Stout, Out Of Mind Coffee Stout, and the utterly fantastic Raspberry Truffale. But I wanted so much more.

Our first brewery for the Colorado portion on this trip. This is a huge facility, and was rather busy, and everyone was crowding the front room instead of spreading out to the other seating areas.

I personally am not a big fan of Belgian beers (I’ve learned it’s something about the yeast that I don’t like), but I found 3 of the four beers in my flight suited my palate quite well.

I had their Salmon Safe IPA, Honey Orange Tripel (the only one I didn’t like), Abbey (Belgian Dubbel),and Trippel (Belgian Trippel)

There’s no food, but they do have a food truck permanently parked out front.

Only open 3 days a week, this is the best of both worlds: a remote small town dive bar that has added the element of a very small microbrewery. And the beer was worth the drive!

Back on my Cinco de Mayo pub crawl of 2007, this place was called Groove and Salina was suffering an insane flood (about 5 inches of rain fell in the space of about 2 hours). We were stuck outside without umbrellas and tried to come in here, but but it was so packed we decided to skip it we hauled our rain-soaked asses up the street to another bar.

But today it’s a brewery, and I was finally able to make a visit.

In addition to a rather good pizza (I’m now 2 for 2 on finding good pizza in Salina), I had Blue Skye’s Crank Case (AIPA), Jalapeno Cream Ale, Brown-Eyed Girl, and Dirty ‘ol Stout.

One element of bar decor I forgot to get a picture of is the confusing lineup of fake doorways all along the hallway leading to the restrooms.

The seating area in the very nice main building is a bit small/cramped for the crowds they get, but they tacked on an enclosed/covered tented seating area in front, plus there are lots more places to sit outside on the expansive grounds.

The most prominent feature on their grounds is the actual “Magic Bus” from the movie “Into the Wild”, which should be noted is not the actual Magic Bus, which still sits the meadow 35 miles west.

This was intended to be a quick drop-in to pick up a visit to a local dive bar I’d known about for almost 30 years but never visited. Just a quick Bud Light, then leave.

Boy was I wrong.

In a bizarre stroke of luck, today was also the first day of their brewery operation that I had never heard a peep about until this visit, and we wound up being their very first customers! They only had 4 of their own beers ready for sale (Atlas Brew, Irish Stout, Russian Imperial Stout, and a barleywine they’d been working on for near 2 years), but all four of them were hit out of the park. We also got to sample their not-quite-ready-for-sale Scottish Ale (it wasn’t fully carbonated yet) and even being partially-flat it was outstanding.

(Another looney law got my in trouble when I tried to buy some beer at a grocery store the next morning.)

I had their Attitude Adjustment and their Livin’ The Dream. I also had Atlantic City Gold by Lander Brewing Company, Pako’s IPA by Snake River Brewing Co., and Dilly Vanilly by Red Lodge Ales.

As we ate/drank, a stray dog came buy looking for some water. After it got a drink a neighbor got it on a leash and took it off to find its owner.

Because of Utah’s strict liquor laws, we had to sit on the restaurant side since we had kids with us. Because of even loonier Utah liquor laws, I had to go to the back to get canned beer I wanted to take home and be escorted out the back door.

Flights are also illegal here but I was allowed two samplers at a time. On-site I sampled Rigor Mortis Red, Little Hole Session Lager, Directional Smoked Porter, and Allosaurus Amber Ale. The smoked porter was my favorite of the on-site samplings.

I also took home some .50 Caliber IPA and Mama’s Milk Stout. As of this writing I have not yet tried the IPA, but the milk stout came in just barely behind the porter in my opinion.

Brewpub on the square ion downtown Liberty. Known for its wood fired pizzas, which I tried and they are awesome. An adjacent building that they had been renovating to expand into collapsed, so they expanded into the buildings on the other side instead and just recently re-opened into all three buildings. (Though there is still some construction underway to repair the wall closest to the collapse. The expansion east also allowed for the opening of a beer garden.

In addition to their own beer they also have a large rotating selection of other craft beers. I stuck with theirs and had the Ryley Porter and the 5K IPA, I was impressed with both.

Madison’s oldest currently-operating brewpub encompasses two buildings on the eastern corner of the outer ring of the Capitol Square. The southwest of the two buildings sits a little higher and seemed to be a bit quieter, while the lower building (where we spend most of our time) had pool tables and darts and was a bit more of a party crowd.

I had Great Dane’s Emerald Isle Stout. You’d think it would be quite a bit higher ABV than just 4.36% considering how blurry my only interior photo turned out…

After a long drive across Wisconsin we arrived here about 55 minutes before closing time, but with people still arriving even as we were leaving I wondered a bit if that closing time is strictly enforced.

The beer tasting area is outdoors and the grounds are a beautiful area to explore with your beer. You can also take your beer on the self guided tour, some photos of which are below. Unfortunately the self-guided tour has little information telling you what is actually going on in any of the viewing areas.

The “admission fee” comes with a choice of individual tasters or two pours in a large souvenir glass. We opted for the latter. I had the famous Spotted Cow for my first. I cannot remember what I got for the second, or even if we went back for seconds, because New Glarus is in a cellular dead zone and I could not log my drinks. (In fact we had to rely on the car’s compass to find out way out of town and on the road to Madison!) If I did go back for seconds, it was probably the Belgian Red.

We got up extra early to try to be on one of the first tours of the day as we had two breweries half a state apart to get to before 5:00pm.

The parking lot was overflowing, far busier than I had expected, in part due to an antique sale plus some other special event in a tent, plus a parade in town. We had to park in the grass. Amazingly we had less than an hour wait for our tour — just enough time to get some shopping and beer tasting in.

I had the Wisconsin Red Pale Ale, Leinenkugel’s Original (which is something we can’t find back home), and the Big Eddy Uber-Oktoberfest (Marzen).

Cameras are prohibited inside the brewery buildings (except the Leinie Lodge) so I only have a few exterior photos from the tour.

Nice German restaurant / beer hall with a small sidewalk patio. As we approached we noticed a number of people walking around in Royals gear, and soon discovered that the Royals were in face going to be playing the Twins in a couple of hours just a block away. (We opened to stick with our original barhopping plans, however.)

We had a delicious “sausage flight” for lunch. As for the beer, they brew their own, and I enjoyed their 4-ounce beer mugs that allowed me to try more varieties. I had their IPA, their Red, and their Golden Lager.

You can’t go wrong with a beer called Filthy McNasty, so it’s lucky we got in here just as they were taking the final orders for flights for the evening.

This place has a pretty cool concept. Sure, the main area is a brewpub, not online many others. But in the back room is a magical area, where people of any skill level can reserve time to go in and brew up 15 gallons of their own beer, any style of flavor you like! Once it’s done fermenting, you and your friends get to have a private tapping in one of the several small bar areas in the back.

This is a concept we really need back home!

Most of our group had not tried mead before, so half of us went with the safe bet, the Apple Pie, while the rest of us were idiots and went straight into the Hot Shot, their habanero mead. Several minutes of hiccups and tears later, those of us with the Hot Shot cooled off with some Apple Pie as well!

We joined up with one of my cousins and her husband to visit a few Columbus bars. We started out with a very nice, upscale brewpub right on the edge of downtown.

I got a flight of five (pictured below) and enjoyed each of them in their own ways. There wasn’t a dud among them.

The street address brings you to the restaurant portion, but if you’re interested in just the beer you can save some indoor navigating by entering from the Hickory Street side. That’s the entrance I used for the map marker below.

Ninja Moose Brewery

Located in a former telephone building, this brewery opened just last year and is drawing crowds from many miles away.

There are currently 8 taps, with more planned in the future. There’s even plans to add on to the building very soon to double its size.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, comfortable, and quiet. They do not use a lot of hops, so the underlying flavors of the beer really come through.

In fact, I need to make a return trip because each beer I tasted hand an underlying floral sweetness that my friend wasn’t tasting. But when we went bowling at a nearby bowling alley later in the afternoon, I experienced the same thing with the Bud Light. And that floral sweetness was gone the next day when I drank the contents of the growler I picked up here. So something was definitely off with my tongue and I didn’t learn what these beers actually tasted like.

They do not serve food, but food is served here. They’ve cooked up an ingenious system where items from nearby restaurants are included on their menu, they then call and order for delivery for you whatever you choose from the menu. It then comes to your table in about the same time it would if it were being prepared in their own kitchen.

This is one of the best microbreweries I’ve been to, it’s definitely worth seeking out.

This place had been in business for all of about 2 hours when we arrived, and there was already a line out the door. Fortunately the patrons inside knew of the wait and didn’t linger, so we were able to get in quickly.

This is a very small facility — a handful of bar stools, a ledge by the east window, and a few small tables out front. But that’s all a smaller-batch facility like this needs.

Normally I’m all about stouts, but here of the four beers I tried I liked the red ale best.

This massive brewpub is located right on the banks of the Missouri River. I don’t remember a lot of details here since this was my third flight and 5th bar of the day, but I do remember that the main bar was a large square on the second floor, that we had lunch here (fish & chips for me), and that it was a pretty upscale place. I just wish I could remember more about the beers I tried!

This is where the day starts getting a little fuzzy. This place was very crowded, with a tour underway when we arrived. There was a fascinating array of beers to choose from, it took me a while to make my choices for my flight.

There was a very nice outdoor beer garden, a pool table (or maybe it was snooker, my memory is kind of cloudy on this detail) and definitely very insufficient restroom facilities for the number of people here.

Nice microbrewery in the heart of Laclede’s Landing in downtown St. Louis. The brewery occupies at least two floors of a beautiful historic building, though I only got a brief glimpse upstairs as they were setting up for a private event.

There was a festival underway for Labor Day Weekend so a number of families were here having lunch. We didn’t try any of the food but we were all very pleased with our beer.

Our 7th and final stop on our mid-Missouri brewery tour was an abandoned meatpacking plant only a year ago. The owners did a fantastic job of converting this into a very nice looking brewery with a huge outdoor area. We got in here just in time, mere minutes before last call.

In an earlier post I mentioned that Prison Brews in Jefferson City had the largest flights of this tour. I was mistaken, it’s Log Boat where our flights had 8 entries served up on little hand-carved boats.

With 3 brewpubs back-to-back-to-back we were now VERY full and starting to feel the effects of alcohol. Consequently the others were unable to finish their flights so I had to perform the solemn ritual of drinking each unfinished taster until they were at least half gone. (Barring, of course, those containing my loathed wheat beer.)

Our 6th stop on our mid-Missouri brewpub tour is below street level down some brick-tiled stairs that we later saw a woman take a tumble on.

I don’t remember exactly how many beers were supposed to be on the flight (it was at least 6 or 7) and apparently no one in the group remembered to take a picture here, but they were out of one of the beers so they gave us a discount. By this point, being so soon after Flat Branch and Prison Brews, we were getting pretty full so it took us a while to drink our selections.

I remember enjoying them all, but I just can’t seem to remember what they were.

Our 5th stop on our mid-Missouri brewpub tour was nearly as good as the 4th. In fact, all three of the Columbia breweries we visited were excellent.

After some initial difficulty figuring our where to actually enter the building, we got seated and ordered appetizers and flights. The food, like every place we’d ordered food today, was again great.

The flights contained 6 beers, and all 6 were very good. The green chili beer was the overall favorite at our table, even the non-beer-drinkers enjoyed it.

Prison Brews

This was the 4th stop on our mid-Missouri brewpub tour, and my favorite stop of the day. It’s located in a cool little neighborhood near Lincoln University and a block or so from the former Missouri State Penitentiary

We had ordered a few sets of appetizers, all of which were delicious. The flight consisted of 7 varieties — the largest of this tour — and apart from my dislike of wheat beer I enjoyed all 6 of the remaining beers thoroughly.

The prison theme is orchestrated in detail, down to the food slots in the bars around the bar (the bar is behind bars) and the restrooms being signed as “Gas Chambers”.

Just outside the building is a nice partially-covered courtyard with ample seating and two bocce courts.

This was the third stop on a mid-Missouri brewpub tour.

This is a new entry, having opened just a few months ago in a former 1970s-era fire station. The tasting room is very small, a short standing-only bar counter and just a few small bar tables.

As seen in one of the photos below, they grow their own hops on site. There’s also a beer garden out back with at least twice as much seating space as they have inside. In addition to the beer they serve wood fired pizzas.

Their flights consist of your choice of three beers, which seemed a little odd to us since they typically have only 4 to 5 varieties available at a time. We paid extra to try them all.

Ok, I try to avoid actual “reviews” on this site whenever possible, but it’s hard not to in this case. Overall, this brewery has been getting glowing reviews across the board, and they have been very busy. While we were there we heard mention of them having a “beer shortage” and witnessed multiple keg changes. So I’m hoping that our visit was just a fluke, because our beer tasted… off. Not just one of them, all of them. I really hope, and want to believe, that we were either getting the bottom of the keg or some batches that had been rushed to try to keep up with demand. In that’s the case, they may want to consider reducing their hours so they have more time to keep up with demand.

Stop #2 in a mid-Missouri brewpub crawl. This is the tasting room at the Mother’s Brewery. There are no flights, but they do let you taste before you buy and you can buy half-pints in order to enjoy more varieties.

I’ve been a fan of Mother’s ever since I discovered it a few years ago, so I took advantage of this opportunity to try out three varieties that aren’t found back home in Kansas City.

This s the first stop of a mid-Missouri brewpub tour. We had lunch here, the food was pretty great (I had some very impressive fish and chips).

There were 6 beers on the flight. Since I don’t like wheat beer, two of them were automatically out for me. But I enjoyed the other four.

This is a pretty huge place, with two large dining floors (we sat upstairs), two bars, and a big rooftop patio.

If you’re wondering why everyone in the main photo is looking to the left, it’s because there are two things happening just outside the frame. First, a woman existing the brewpub tripped, then dropped and fell on top of her baby. The baby was perfectly fine (in a carrier) but the mom was pretty freaked out. Secondly, a cigarette bin had just caught fire.

Big Rip is a smaller facility with an intimate bar area. They brew small batches and experiment with multiple flavors, so their hours tend to vary based upon how long each batch of beer lasts.

The bar has free wifi and accepts Square Wallet, and like Cinder Block they allow outside food to b brought in.

I spent months thinking about what I wanted my 1,000th bar to be. It needed to be local, centrally-located, something special, not-pretentious, not a chain, not in the Power and Light District, and a place that had either recently opened or wasn’t well-known.

Fate seemed to have chosen Cinder Block Brewery for me, because it met every single one of these criteria and opened right after I reached #999.

I started off with the beer flight and, while I normally prefer the darker beers, I found the Northtown Native to be my favorite of the set.

As a slideshow of my previous 999 bars played on the wall, my family and friends sampled the brews and the salty snacks. (Free popcorn!) We also enjoyed the cake we brought in.

There’s free wifi, a popcorn machine, menus for various delivery places you can order in food from (Caddyshack Pizza being the best option of course). And for the technophiles such as myself, you can pay with your phone with the Square Wallet app.

We had gone walking around some of the side streets looking for a dive, but we didn’t find anything that was open yet. Our walk back towards the car took us by this brewpub, so we decided to stop in.

B got the Southern Flyer Lager, I got the Iron Horse Stout.

The bartender told us that this is a local place, but that it had fairly recently been bought by Gordon Biersch so is now technically part of that chain.

The Blackhorse Pub was a bar I was eager to visit, unfortunately it has closed early on this Thursday night. However its upstairs spin-off, The Tap Room, was open and very busy.

We proceeded up a very long, steep, and narrow staircase to the upper level. There was no seating available at the U-shaped bar, nor at any of the tables. After standing for a while a small table opened up towards the back that we migrated to.

It was very dark inside so I apologize for the poor picture quality.

The Tap Room is a dive bar, an upscale lounge, and a sports bar. It’s rare to see a place that pulls off all three well. (It should be noted that at $3 a bottle, these were some of the more expensive beers we had in Clarksville.)

The front half of this floor is a bar, the back half is a very mellow lounge bathed in a soft blue light.

Up another smaller set of stairs to the side is another room that had pool tables and other games. We didn’t make it into that room during our visit.

Nice brewpub on the riverfront in downtown Cape Girardeau. Two levels of restaurant seating and a long, curving bar under a 2-story skylight.

I only tried the porter. It was slightly more bitter than I prefer but it was still quite good.

Kansas City location of a brewpub restaurant chain. Beer is served directly from the vats via chilled taps.

The bar area is removed from the restaurant and has a more cozy feel than you might expect from a place of this size. The large windows behind the bar are a nice touch.

Gottberg Brew Pub

We had trouble finding this place. First off, the building doesn’t look like a bar. Second, we went inside and the first set of doors took us to a fancy restaurant. Then we tried another direction and found ourselves in a business office. Luckily a friendly person there told us how to get to the bar through the restaurant.

B tried their American Gold, while I tried the 1916 Irish Stout. We met the brewmaster, who had actually just started working there a few days earlier. He had applied at a few places, including the 75th Street Brewery back home in KC. 75th Street had apparently called to offer him a job just after he accepted the job here.

We also learned that the Gottberg brew pub is owned by the same guy who owns Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing.

By the way, $2 draws. How often do you see that at a brewpub?

This place was unbelievably huge, quite possibly the biggest bar I’ve ever been in. We both had the stout. B thought it was a little too sweet, I didn’t agree at the time but after I finished I noticed the sweetness in the aftertaste. At $4 a pint the prices weren’t bad for this type of place.

The men’s room had a couple of eye charts: one of a stripper that gets smaller as she undresses and one telling you that if you can still read it you need more beer. There was also a flow chart for determining whether it is time to go home.

UPDATE (April 6, 2013)

The eye charts in the men’s room have been replaced with pin-up girls.
